And will this encourage Elven caravans to bring their rare and special goods? I've noticed some things made of unique materials in Elven caravans (Liquid darkness, rotting fabric), that have incredibly high values. Only thing in their caravans I'm interested in.
Do note what you buy also influences what they bring in the future. If you keep buying their cloth, after a while that's the majority of their wares.

It's subtle, but it does happen. Helps if you order stuff from them, but even unprompted I've had humans roll up with more and more food, and dorf caravans roll up with more and more raw materials.
Personally, I wouldn't even call it subtle. I'd call it incredibly significant. If you find your fortress is low on metals, buy all the metals the human caravan brings and after the first year they'll have double that amount. Or ordering iron ores, and other steelmaking materials from the dwarven caravan, the first year you get five of each, then the next year maybe six, or seven, and it can go all the way up to ten of a certain thing if you keep buying it.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

It still hasn't been explained, will giving the caravan a larger profit mean they will bring more of the stuff you want next time?

Yes, the larger the profits the larger the caravans they send will be. I believe this is modified by the size of their civ, though, so a struggling elven civ might not send more than 3 pack animals regardless of how much you butter them up. Obviously, there is also a max size somewhere.
