[Resolved] No more plump helmet spawn, but cooking is disabled?
« on: December 13, 2015, 05:49:46 pm »

Playing 42.02 and my fort is going pretty well. But normally I have 4 or more massive farm plots full of various crops at this point. I've just seen an alert that says no plump helmet spawn. So I check the farm. It's empty. The seed stockpile, empty. The stocks screen has no plump helmet spawn (https://goo.gl/G8AaAu). Pig tails are also gone.

When I first embarked I disabled cooking of plump helmets (https://goo.gl/FL3yNZ). So this is weird. Brewing is supposed to give seeds back.

My stockpile is set to store all seeds (https://goo.gl/SvnBEn) and has only 2 of 16 spaces containing barrels. One barrel has random seeds from the surface, the other is empty. The stockpile can accept 12  barrels (https://goo.gl/8RddKX).

Nothing special about my farm plot either. It's indoors, on farmable soil. It has been working so far.

Here's my farm area: https://goo.gl/FxxwFB

I've read that 40.x had an issue where you had to store seeds in bags, but I've also read that isn't a problem in 42.x anymore.

Can anyone help out? I'm at a loss :(

I've had mysterious absences of seeds as well, with embark vegetables disappearing (presumably eaten, but that should yield seeds) without any seeds produced. When I later bought the same kind of vegetables from a caravan and brewed them I did receive seeds, however.

Apart from oddities, a couple of legal reasons are:
- The crops withered in the fields. Can happen if everyone is too busy to harvest, or you set only the farmer to harvest and he's too busy. Can also happen if your target stockpile is full (tends to happen to me early on when my feeder QS stockpile gets full, as mine cart filling is a low priority hauling task).
- Seed cooking is accidentally enabled. Since it's turned off by default that's probably not it.

Did you check for plump helmets?  The fully grown plants?  If I run out of seeds in the first year of a fortress, it's usually because all of my seeds were planted, matured, were harvested, and are sitting in the plant stockpile because they haven't been eaten or brewed yet.

OH MY GOD. I'm an idiot. Yes even in one of my screenshots I've got plenty of the grown plant in stock.

So my brewers are obviously just not keeping up. I'll put a couple dedicated brewers on the job.

Such a rookie mistake. Thanks for catching that! I was getting worried that farming was just broken in this version.

This happens to me SO often.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".
