Best way to find a vampire?
« on: December 06, 2015, 02:30:13 am »

I've found two vampires already, both by random encounters while fast travelling. The first fight ended with me dying by venom, and the second, I killed the vampire and thought I drank it's blood, turns out when I tried "Feeding" it didn't work, so I had the greatest stupidest idea to just jump off a tree instead of trying to find the body.

Anyone else know any way that is fast and easy? (I don't do very much quests, so anything other than that. c:)

UPDATE:

I figured that encounters are not very a good choice, but if you're prepared (Or, if you cheat :P) you can find grey asterisks (*) on the fast travel menu, run into them and a you will have an encounter, don't panic if it is not a vampire, just try again.

Yup, you'll either become a werebeast or vamp, if you see the red masterwork symbols pop up in nearby buildings you're a vamp, otherwise next full moon you discover what you became and get any broken/missing limbs healed.

Topple a statue.

I got cursed for such an act, but I don't recall it doing anything except weighing down my backpack (I stole the statue for lifting, breh).

Wait till a  full moon, it is either vampire or werebeast nothing else, if you didn't see immediate effects, you are a werebeast.

I followed a bunch of asterisks on the travel map earlier and discovered an all-out melee between a bunch of vampires and night creatures. O.o

Hm, somewhat related question - I heard that when you ask people for trouble vampires show up as beasts. Does it explicitly say it's a vampire in the description or not?

In the description as "They tell you, that X is a vampire."? Yes
In the description as "As soon as you meet someone you will see whether he is a vampire or not."? No. (There are exceptions - mostly in case of wandering/marauding outcasts you will meet throughout the world. There it will say "olm woman spearmaster vampire"/something similar. The civilized version of vampire on the other hand? No, you won't recognize them as such.)
You have to accuse him first.

You can find vampires by yourself, too, without anyone mentioning his name.
First hint: The symbol of this person is flashing (i.e. he has some stats that are skilled beyond normal peasent-equivalence).
Second hint: He wears amulets, rings, crowns made of sapient beings (hair, nails, bones).
Third hint: In the description he is told to be very muscular and that he has white hair (the latter doesn't appear in the case of goblins and elves).
Fourth hint: Asking him about his family and/or profession. If you live at the year 300 and he tells you that his son died 200 years ago, you can bet, that he is a vampire (carefully in the case of goblins and elves).
Fifth hint: Forget all of these hints and accuse everybody you will weet. If they aren't night creatures, you won't lose anything by denouncing them.

Happy hunt.

I don't know if this is true now, but it definitely did not used to be.  Vampires, Necromancers, and all Night Creatures should show up as "bone chilling horror" in conversation.

I usually find vampires in legends mode (with legends viewer, which needs some updating for the new version) and then go to their area and ask around about BCH until someone complains of one.  Sometimes takes a while if there is lots of other BCH around.

A couple times, the only vampires were wandering the wilderness at the time I was looking for them, and no amount of waiting caused them to re-settle.  That might be fixed now that the world is active at all times, I dunno.  You can always hunt down local *'s if they are wandering... that's time consuming and often fruitless though.

I checked by firing up  0.40, cause I thought that this wasn't the case.
And my suspicion proved right.
I never had vampires and night creatures show up under "bone chilling horrors", just necromancers.
Night creatures and vampires always were mentioned under "beasts".
