Dead or dying civilzations
« on: December 04, 2015, 06:11:30 pm »

I've seen a couple people mention that it there civ was dead or dying -- I have generated only one dwarf civ in 0.42.01, and it was also dead or dying.  I understand that is not new, but I'm curious if it's more prevalent -- or just coincidence.

I'm using CLA's graphics pack so I didin't vote, since that makes it not strictly vanilla.

BTW, thanks for my favorite graphics pack, CLA :)

feels like there are more dead dorf civs now, almost never had any dead civs on 40 but now I seem to get dead civs fairly often.

In smaller world it is oftent for me to generate either dwarves or elves being wiped out. Hopefully now there are also mixed population, with joint human-elven-dwarven-goblin mountainhomes hilariously went into loyalty cascade on my adventurer's embark.

I've generated 6 worlds since the release, 3 medium, two smaller, and one pocket.
All of them were generated to 250 (except for the pocket, which was exactly 1000.)
I didn't see a single dwarf civ that was dead or dying.

However, In every single one of those worlds, goblins were dying out.

I almost never get humans or kobolds lately.

I, on the other hand, have seen elves get constantly wiped out in the latest release. Not that I'm complaining.

I think it's not so much dead or dying, by reading the replies, but more now that sieges work it's more common to end up with people being wiped out :|a

Definitely feels like it was already common in the last version.

If you want your civs to survive early world gen more often, decrease the number of megabeasts/titans. They can destroy settlements as a history event and if they do it right at the start it may be the only few settlements that civ has.

I just always set civilization number to 2x default, and some of civs survive.

Whenever i read the "doesn't care about anything anymore" line, i instantly imagine a dwarf, sitting alone on a swing set. Just slowly rocking back and forth, somberly staring at the ground, and stopping every once in a while to sigh.
It's mildly depressing.

It's always possible for a large number of megabeasts to kill a civilization early.
Dead civs have been more common since version .40 too.

I rarely see them in normal world generation. But in advanced parameters they are always guaranteed since I double or triple Savagery and Beasts.

It seems to me that some dorf civs spawn in mountains next to tundra, which they can't expand to and die off when a megabeast looks at them funny a few years later.
