Any way to make birthing require water?
« on: December 05, 2015, 11:43:46 pm »

I've been working on a custom sentient race for some time. They can innately swim, but are otherwise humanoid land creatures. I was curious if it was possible to either force or at least compel any births to require the creature to be in water?

Birth and pregnancy are not moddable at the moment, beyond whether the creature lays eggs or has live births, and how many may be born at once.

To my knowledge a few tags (use to) indirectly affect birthing. The sad part is, I don't think you can make an aquatic creature go on land very easily... Unless they had no lungs. I don't know. But water births were always messy anyway (at least eggs were) because you needed exactly 4/7 water so the nest box wasn't listed as 'submerged' but also have enough water for a creature to lay eggs....

I am not sure how modding works, but could you make infants require water to breathe like fish? I know size changes for adolescence and adulthood, maybe gills could change too.

Also, would it be possible to make females of the species aquatic for the entire life span? That way you wouldn't have adult females giving birth on land, but the males could leave water after childhood.

You cannot define different attributes for children, beyond what children are named.

You can define different attributes for genders, since they are different castes within the creature, and castes can be made to be incredibly different.

Size is the only thing defined by age.

The reason for requiring water to give birth wasn't for biological reasons, but actually a sort of religious belief. Among several other things, they revere water and water deities, so for them giving birth in water was both a blessing for the children (they always birth pairs) and to honor their deities.
