We might be able to use the pole and metal plating to form a lean to at the escape pod entrance start a fire under it and rest inside the now warm escape pod.

In my experience it is typically one of the following:
1: It is impossible.
2: It will take an entire empire years to to achieve even a few words, and the rest will only take longer.
3: It is easy and only takes a few hours/days but you need major facilities and anyone off on their own is stuck.
4: Universal Translator...
5: It is completely impossible until some orphan is raised by aliens and automatically knows the language of their species or something and is the only thing in the whole universe that can translate...
