Magma Overflow
« on: January 22, 2008, 03:24:00 pm »

So the map I decided to make my fort on had a magma well in it with an overhang of land above it. I hadn't noticed the overhang until the 3rd year or so and decided that it would be interesting to see what would happen if the overhang collapsed into the magma. So I went to work digging a few channels to make maybe 6 squares of land fall into the pool of magma. This caused all three floors of magma above my magma smelters to overflow. This meant that I had 3 floors of 7/7 magma flowing into the floor with my magma smelters. I'm not sure if this was a bug so I just decided to put it in general discussion. But has anyone else tried anything like this before?

If you throw a rock in a pond the water will rise

in magma it just melts the rock and make more magma which just overflows in to your lovely fortress

and yes i have experimented with magma i love it when it hits walls of coal and lights them up!

Yes but should 6 squares of land really create enough lava or displace enough lava to cause 3 floors of lava to overflow? and also the lava didn't overflow at the top it just got sucked down into the smelters and overflowed there.

Hold it - does that mean with a bit of work magma can be replenished?

Thats what I thought.
I have been having my dwarves dump stone in the volcano for this reason. Seems to be working, hard to tell.

I don't think so.  Ive dumped well over 3000 rocks into my magma, and the level hasnt moved at all yet.  Its fairly easy to test for yourself though.

If you callapse walls and such into the magma, magma will indeed rise and overflow.. Just by displacement, no extra magma is made.

Lavamist is yellow, I didn't know that before my Secret Project.

Yes, I understand that magma gets displaced and needs a place to go so it overflows, but why would it overflow into my smelters and not just over the sides at the top and why would three floors of magma overflow when less than one floor was displaced.

related question: is magma used up by magma forges, or will it last forever once you have a stable channel in place?

As long as the magma doesn't cool down, it should be fine to use indefinitely with your smelters  :)

3. They're Scottish.
