Author Topic: Reposting pictures from artists while giving credit and being good  (Read 1478 times)

I like the work of a couple of really neat artists. I want to repost some of their work to facebook or someplace while giving credit and linking back to their site, or portfolio or whatever.

Is that ok to do? I mean if I do this:

(Picture from Artist)
(Line giving artist credit by name)
(Link to artist's website)

Then is that a problem? Do I have to do it differently? Can I do it at all?

Honestly, I figure what I'm really doing is giving them free publicity. It isn't like I'm saying it's mine; I'm saying it's this other person's and here's their website.

There's generally no legal requirement to credit an artist for reasonable fair use of their work. But if you'd like to be a good guy, name of artist and a link to their website/deviantart portfolio/etc. would be polite.

Besides it being legal, i'm also fairly sure that the vast majority of artists are entirely okay with it, given that you're linking to the artists and giving them full credit (although keep an eye out for disclaimers saying the opposite, they're usually QUITE visible if they're there). The typical no-no to be aware of is using/monetizing the art without their explicit permission, which would be both rude as hell and also copyright infringement in many cases. This... Is more like showing your friends a cool newspaper comic, really, so i wouldn't worry.

If in doubt, you could always ask the artists, but frankly, i don't think you'd need to for something like this. Hell, i'd be flattered if i was in their position. :P

Most artists will be fine with it, as long as it isn't paywalled content you're sharing. However, if you aren't sure then why not just send them a message and ask them?

I follow a lot of artists on a number of sites, and most of them get pretty worked up about being reposted without credit, but appreciate being reposted with credit. It is as you say free advertising, and unless they specifically ask you not to on their website, I'm sure it's fine.

It's sometimes good to check if the artist in question is ok with the site you want to repost it at.
An artist who absolutely despises Facebook might get worked up if you post his picture in FB for example. Even if you give him or her credit.

Otherwise i'd say it's fine as long as:

You don't:
Say you made it.
Remove their signature.
Talk negatively about the picture (criticism even constructive tends to send artists into a hissy fit so better be safe than sorry).

You do:
Give him/her credit.
Link back to their site or art account.

Adding to that bit there :O
Otherwise I'd say reposting pictures done by artists is fine as long as:

You don't:
Say you made it.
Remove their signature.
Talk negatively about the picture (criticism even constructive tends to send artists into a hissy fit so better be safe than sorry).
Monetize it (like make a t-shirt or something with the design, uncredited and otherwise)
Have the wording sound like it's disassociated from its original source

You do:
Give him/her credit.
Link back to their site or art account.

Here's an example of giving credit link!
There's a tiny bit on the source at the end. That leads to this guy (who's had his work stolen at times >_>) but yeah.

It's the usual to give credit as it doesn't take...a significant amount of time to type or link the author/source anyway. :)
