Pretty much just what it says in the title. I've noticed in the latest version (after not playing for a year or so; I don't remember if I had this problem in the earlier DF2014 versions) that if I have a barracks designated at all, most or all of my military will go "Individual Combat Drill" there constantly. This happens even if that squad's not set to train at that barracks, and even if I have a high-priority job up for one of their labors. If I want them to do something else I have to remove the barracks entirely.

I have the schedules set to a minimum of 1 for training every month, so there's no reason it should be the entire squad, and early in a fort I actually still need some of them to do their jobs... what's going on here?

Also, since so many of them are training at once, why am I not seeing any sparring?

And then what?  Mine the sky? . . .  Actually, that'd be awesome.

1) If their not scheduled for training, they won't train with each other just individual drill. Most of them prioritise that over hauling rocks, same way fishermen prioritise fishing over hauling rocks. It's just the more interesting of the options to most dwarves (and will help keep them alive when the goblins attack).

2) If they're set to train, but don't seem to ever spar, check what they're actually doing. Permanent individual drill probably indicates you've not set their alert to training and they're just off-duty soldiers enjoying themselves as mentioned above. On the other hand, if they're teaching each other dodging, shield usage, biting technique and so on, that's perfectly normal. Sparring is only one part of a squad's routine. Don't worry, combat skills increase much faster than they used to. Just had a year 2 spring goblin attack, 3 dwarves training for just two seasons managed to see off the 10 armed goblins with only a couple of bruises (they did have basic weapon skills before they started, and the hole in my cavern wall gave them some live practice against trolls, crundles and giant cave swallows beforehand).

Soldiers with 'No Orders' will choose their preferred activity.  Once a Dwarf becomes skilled enough, that activity is training.  The only way to guarantee a military Dwarf returns to Civilian labor is by removing it from the squad.  However, this can cause serious bad thoughts, so I don't recommend it unless your labor situation is dire.  As for sparring, most likely this is b/c Individual Drill is faster than finding a partner.  I only use Minimum 1 with my Marksdwarves.  All melee Squads should have a Minimum 2.

Lastly, you don't need to fill an entire squad on the first pass.  If your population is low, choose 4 Peasants and have them start training.  There is no harm done if a Dwarf never develops other skills beyond combat.  So long as they have a cabinet and dining hall, your military Dorfs will happily spar forever.  Hope this helps :)

I'm looking through the wiki now and I'd completely missed that there was a training alert (was that in DF2010?). That explains the lack of sparring.

Maybe someday we'll have a military interface that's a little more intuitive...

I am really looking forward to this being resolved. Currently there is no way to automate periodic military training and working on labors, and instead requires a ton of micromanagement by removing barracks or removing soldiers from squads. Maybe if a Barracks is set to "Squad training only" without "Individual training" they should do labors instead since no barracks is designated for them to individually train in, but i don't think this works.

"Squad" and "Individual" in barracks settings refer to "Squad equipment" and "individual equipment" I think.
No, no idea what it means...

As far as I understand, the Squad/Individual equipment settings for barracks specify whether armor/weapon/... gear should be stored there. Someone said the individual setting currently does nothing. Regardless, these settings are for storage, not training.
