Is there any way to make a species which requires a substance
« on: December 04, 2015, 02:47:04 pm »

Is there any way, in the current syndromes system to make a species which requires a substance other than alcohol like dwarves required alcohol?

How about simply "addictive" substances which give advantages while supplied and cancel out any withdrawl effects once the supply runs out?

Even better: Is there any way to link it to specific body parts such as a species which loses all it's hair or suffers tissue wastage if it isn't exposed to some particular substance?

Yes, apart from the hair-loss this can all be done with syndromes and syndrome-classes. More difficult will be making the species smart enough to know about this. If they have 10 drinks, 5 are the special substance and 5 are normal alcohol, they will still drink one at random instead of picking the special substance over the alcohol.

Hmm, syndromes can be transmitted by more than just food and drink though can't they?

You could have something like a milkable domestic animal which produces the substance.
Would it be possible to dump a load of it into troughs along main hallways?

Have the syndrome make everyone extremely happy with the withdrawal being something nasty.

Then run soma-fortress or krokodil-fortress. Nobody leaves!

can you make a drink that nullifies other poisons for a duration?

such as make the creature poison themselves that does slow necrosis of the brain then have a drink that makes the necrosis not happen for a season or two

Not sure about THAT, but it should be possible for them to have in their natural state terrible attributes in every field and some other detriments which are made up for by the syndrome they get from their special substance abuse. If you don't provide it, they are surely doomed at the first sign of trouble, and incapable of great achievements. We have CE_CHANGE_PERSONALITY:FACET as well. Presumably their natural personalities can be easily prone to psychological failures, and the syndrome averages them out into something functional.

It would be irrelevant for any other races, I suppose.

Not sure how Disease Resistance works, but if the affecting syndrome has RESISTABLE, you could have the cure potion boost DR to the maximum. It won't work on the more advanced syndromes though.
