A...thing...
« on: September 19, 2015, 02:43:23 am »

OK so a giant toad wandered into my caverns, and as I set my squad on it I noticed...a fungiwood free was obscured by smoke.
Smoke.
Underground.
In the second cavern.
In a tree growing out of a lake.
Is this...a thing that happens? A bug? A feature? Did I miss something? No dorf was even nearby, theres no magma near here! What the hell happened?

The most obvious explanation that springs to mind is that you have missed a fire breathing/fire composed FB, which seems unlikely.
Have you fully explored the cavern so you know it's not connected to the one above/below where the FB above might have entered, been noted, and then dismissed as being in a cavern you're not frequenting anyway? They can pass between caverns if there is an access between them, and such passages sometimes exist.

Fire imps are known to set things on fire, but that would require a path from the magma sea. Magma can set trees on fire as well, but you didn't have any nearby.

Another possibility is that it wasn't smoke but mist that was thrown up by something (e.g. a toad) dropping/jumping into the water.

Yeah, mist probably. Unless you have magma access, in which flame creatures might have been brawling. Or just walking around, I forget how the physics works with that.

No forgotten beasts had shown up, no magma beasts were nearby, mousing over it showed clearly it was smoke, though the tree branches were completely untouched when it cleared.
Also, it was right on the edge of the map, if that helps.
