Werebeasts?
« on: September 19, 2015, 11:17:26 am »

How do you deal with werebeasts? A werechinchilla appeared, and it was at my entrance extremely quickly. It was very fast, and the only thing that prevented it from coming in was that there are an insane number of cats at my fort and it took the beast some time to kill all of the cats walking around the entrance before an armored soldier came and killed it without receiving any bites. How do I deal with this in the future? Armor will block werechinchilla bites, but a weremammoth will pulp through armor probably. Also, my soldiers got sad from killing it, as they were horrified to witness its death.

Breed more cats.

::EDIT::
Ok, so seriously, you have a few more options, but none of them are nearly as awesome. The main difference between your military and a werebeast is that they are armed and armored. A weremammoth (in my experience) does not care what you are wearing, and will in fact just sort of crush your body parts and/or launch you around the room until you explode. A military with good dodge/weapon skill can counter this nicely.

I have used cage traps to great effect against werebeasts. Alternatively you could use a raising drawbridge to just seal up your fort when you don't need to go outside.

::EDIT::
Breed bigger cats.

Dunamisdeos, how are you using cage traps against trap avoiding weres who are also stun resistant? You can trap them on the way out after they've transformed back, of course, but that's rather pointless. Web enhanced traps would do the trick, of course.

Another thing with weres is that they are sneakers, so you'll only detect them upon their entering the fortress, encountering a dorf outside, or, if that ever happens, it attacks local wildlife. You could therefore sprinkle the map with little huts with carved fortifications for walls and pasture a hunter trained dog (or ordinary cat) inside. If a were comes close enough it will try to destroy the door (should be locked, of course) and then kill the animal. That ought to buy you time to get everyone to safety. You could also build your huts without doors, in which case the animal will detect the were, but you'll lose the additional time it takes for it to destroy the door and animal.
Once everyone is safely inside you can just ignore it, since it will transform back and flee at sunrise. This, of course, means it still exists at large and thus could potentially return at some future time.

Werebeasts are building destroyers.  I accidentally caught one once with a trap intended for trolls.  There was a masterwork door surrounded by traps.  The werebeast was attracted to the door, but took so long to destroy it that it transformed back and was caught by the traps.

So, if the point is just to detect them, park a few animals at the entrance to your fort. Maybe some war-dogs or larger-than-normal cats. He will either bump into them or try to eat them.

If the point is to kill them, my best bet has always been a well-trained military dwarf, focus on dodge. They bleed to death like anything else.

If you want to capture them, use cage traps and distractions. You have maybe 30s before the thing turns back, just give it something to do away from your dwarves (like a cat, maybe breed some more cats) and cage trap it on the way out. While I'm sure there are other methods, I've used this one many times.
