Will starting a war endanger your civilization?
« on: September 02, 2015, 06:15:39 am »

Will starting a war with, say, the elves cause them to attack the other settlements belonging to your civilization?

I'm feeling like destroying some elven army, but I'd rather not endanger my home civilization yet.

I don't believe so.

Either way, I remember in previous versions that battles between dwarves and elves were very lopsided in favor of dwarves because they had metal equipment and elves were restricted to wood.  Don't know if that's been changed since then though.

IIRC, yes. This is apparently another reason why sieges in .40 are so rare - the invading armies will often choose your civ's other sites over yours.

And Bouchart, I don't think equipment material has any effect on worldgen battles. At that level of abstraction, I think it just takes the skills and general size of the creatures when running the battles.

A different fortress I once played was part of a Dwarven civilization being at war with a Goblin civilization. The Goblins mostly just attacked all other settlements beside mine until one of my starting seven suddenly becomes King (and therefore a lazy, entitled, parasitic twit). So unless there's a population requirement for sieges that I am unaware of, the goblins will definitely invade other settlements first if at war.

Also, worldgen battles nowadays seem to be lopsided in favor of the Elves instead due to the sheer number of soldiers they have. It's not rare to read battles in legends mode where 380 elves converge on 9 hapless dwarves. Only the Goblins seem have a chance to take on them in my current world.

I should probably test out the effects of starting a war with the Elves, especially because my civilization is on the other side of the world. See if distance has an effect on sieges.

I've always been more of a pacifist in DF, but don't elves have massive armies in compensation for their elfhood lack of useful materials?

Well, the Goblins decided to declare war on me first.

After seeing the world in legends mode, I can confirm that civilizations who attack your fortress first will be attacking the settlements of your civilization (despite it being half the world away). So yes, starting wars do indeed endanger your civilization.

At least I managed to see an entry in which 207 elves and 5057 goblins get defeated by 34 humans who only suffered 4 losses. Seriously.

34 Weaponlords vs. thousands of untrained peasants who cried and ran at the first casualties. Possibly not even their own.  :P

Instant FPS death. Plus most of your map covered in goblins both living and dead.

Depends on if that was the first siege. Enough others beforehand could have toughened everyone up already. The FPS death would still be a problem.
