Hero's Song is back!
« on: September 20, 2016, 11:19:43 am »

To anyone who was interested in the original Kickstarter and the disappointed when it was canceled, Hero's Song has an Indiegogo campaign going at the moment. Looks like they are set on creating the game regardless of whether they hit their 200k goal.

I think this thing has a ton of potential.

Seems like a somewhat interesting take on dungeon crawling?

Honestly, I hate that in-game art style though. For "beautiful 2D pixel art style" it looks really hideous.

Everything looks incredibly interesting except for the Diablo-style clickfest controls.

Why does the studio formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment need our money to make a roguelike?

It doesn't really look like pixel graphics either. Pretty sure the characters are 3d or pre-renders.

Yep, those are pre rendered 3d models alright.

Why on earth do they advertise it as "beautiful 2d pixel art" when it's pre-renders? do they really think they will get more money because they said pixel art?

But that's not what's bothering me most, what's bothering me most is that they already raised $2.8M and are now asking for $200K? so 7% of what they got is absolutely crucial for them to finish a roguelike? what the heck? they are a 19 strong team operating less than a year now and what they are missing is 200K? how? why? for what? they could have paid themselves top industry salaries and still keep a hefty change with that initial sum. not convincing.

Too bad since i love Patrick Rothfuss.

I gotta say that I'm not that into the graphic style either. I'm hoping it'll make up for that by being a great story generator, but time will tell.

As for why they are raising another 200K, I don't really know. Seems like they don't really need the money to complete the game in any way. I'm just glad it is being developed regardless because I don't think they'll make that mark.

Watched some videos on people playing it on youtube. It looks okay. Seems like there isn't really that much to do, but it is alpha. I never really watched this game at all, and never really read anything about it. But the way the world does the story/history is pretty cool. Rather similar to dwarf fortress world style.

Honestly, doesn't seem THAT great to me. I dunno. I like diablo 2 and 3/torchlight 2...but there is a lot of stuff to do in both of those. It always leads to killing non-stop, but at least there are tons of quests and things to accomplish. Maybe I'm missing the point of hero's song.

At least hero's song has crafting, thats pretty unique for a diablo style game. Or is it even meant to be compared to a hack and slash? In any case, still seems pretty lacking in content from what little I've read and some of the videos I've watched.

Then again, I might not even be the player its aiming for, since I prefer reasons (even if artificial) to go do stuff like how diablo and torchlight do lol. Never liked doing something in a game for no reason at all. Or maybe I'm missing the entire point of the game like I said lol.

Its alpha of course, so maybe it'll put more stuff to explore or something.

I'll also add..

I mean, I don't need like quests or whatever. I like sandbox games, like Ultima Online/EVE. There is tons of reasons to do stuff in those. But there seems there is no reason to do much in the game, at least in alpha. There doesn't seem there is much to explore or find, and less to do than diablo/torchlight. I even love(d) haven and hearth (for those who know that one), and that was pretty directionless. But tons to do in that game.

If I'm missing the goal of the game, maybe someone can chime in and tell me what the game is about and correct me on my ways. The only thing I can see "unique" is it advertises tons of people on a server, but I actually don't have any interest in that in a hack and slash, top view game that is multiplayer. That seems to be its big feature, which I don't really have an interest in lol.

Dunno, I don't think the game looks bad. Guess everyone is different.

Then again, I played Wurms Online for quite a while and that game is ugly as hell lol. I think Hero's Song looks better than Wurms Online, and I think it even looks better than Rimworld and similar artstyle games (which I personally think are ugly).

Guess everyone is different. I know a few people who really like Rimworld's artstyle and similar aesthetics, but for me it looks bad.

However, gameplay is where it matters most. Cause Wurm Online is pretty ugly, and I still really enjoyed playing it. And with that, I don't see much gameplay that pops out as amazing in Hero's Song. But its alpha, so all the content isn't in. But while the graphics look nice to me, the game itself feels meh. But again, its alpha I guess.

Wait what's his role on the project?  I stopped following his blog when it turned into him talking about fundraisers and his baby.

I actually kinda dig the character models, compared to a lot of popular games at least, but most of those environments are ugly as siiiin.
The trees and houses remind me of Graal Online, hahaha.

Wait, someone else actually played that game?
Yeah, I was kind of obsessed with it for a while because it was an "MMO" that my computer could actually more-or-less run. :P
