Soldiers wont wear armour
« on: September 02, 2015, 08:33:43 pm »

So i've set up my first squad of ten. I made sure before hand to have a full set of bronze armour for each of them, helms, breastplates, greaves, the lot. I made a squad with a migrant wave, and they took the breastplates and practically nothing else. The military equip screen says they have them, though. Have I missed a step somewhere along the line? I peeked with df hack and i know i have some knarly shit in the caverns, and i'd like them fully kitted up before exploring further.

You might want to set uniform to "replace clothing", though I think it will only help with helmets. Check through military-e if all what is set for them is actually marked with green symbol. Assing the squad uniform again, this should restart assigning process. Finally, equiping apparently takes time sometimes.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Armor has a ton of useful information, it's pretty darn complex.

The short answer: Each piece of clothing can be shaped or not, and you can only have one piece of shaped clothing per location (so cap+helm is not possible, but hood+helm is fine).

The easiest setup is to make sure you have enough armor, and then just specify only metal armor and replace clothing. Dwarf Therapist now has useful green/blue/red uniform indicator, you can easily see what everyone is wearing/missing.

I've tried uniforms with both clothing and armor, but there are always pieces missing and worn clothing doesn't always get replaced, so I just gave up. Soldiers might be a bit more protected by piling more material on them, but in my experience a well trained militia (being necessary to the security of a free State?) does well enough in full metal armor without extra clothing layers. It also saves the fuss of dealing with replacement clothing...

Yup, clothing assigned as armour (cloaks, hoods, robes, etc, that you put in your uniforms) aren't replaced when it wears out. It would be pretty darn useful if clothing would vanish out because of wearing even if being in use, so that military dwarves would just go to the stocks to pick up a new one.

I usually assign only the true armour pieces (helms, breastplates, chain mail, gauntlets, greaves and boots), with 'exact matches' on and without replacing clothes. They'll, then, use whatever clothes they want. But, even, then, it takes a long time for them to pick up all the armour pieces.

Got it. It turned out "Replace clothing" had to be enabled for each dorf. I hit the replace clothing function for my militia commander and thought that would apply to the whole squad. The Furious Nights are now kitted out in lovely bronze. Thanks for the help you guys!

You need to press shift-enter to apply uniform to entire squad.

I assume this question is answered, so forgive me for asking my own question here.

I'm setting up a 30-man military because my fortress is getting rather large. I've forged the steel, copper, and iron things, and the uniform pane of the military page says that each dwarf has all the armor assigned. Somehow, though, I then inspect individuals and see that they're wearing mismatched armor or they're not wearing pants. While I'd normally be ecstatic about not wearing pants, it's building up stress and I'm not sure who's prepared for another cavern breach and who isn't (I'm very slow when playing DF, I don't usually breach caverns until my 2nd year). I'm on 'replace clothing', mind you.

Did you mark the uniform to 'exact matches'? Also, if you set the uniform to replace clothes and do not set clothes as part of the uniform, dwarves will not use it, IIRC.

I wasn't aware that that was how the system worked. Thanks!
