Does magma burn through sand walls?
« on: August 13, 2015, 04:02:25 am »

I'm playing in DF version 34.11  and embarked on a location with a volcano.  I was just wondering if, while carving out a magma channel... is it okay for part of it to be soil/loamy sand tunnel?   Will the magma burn through the sand walls and start pouring out of the mountain?

As of currently it doesnt even burn through ice walls provided they have been constructed.
No idea how the Dwarfs manage that feat, anyhow....

Nope, wont burn though sand as of right now.

Flowing magma will burn trees and logs in your stockpile alike, but will be stopped by a wooden wall/drawbridge.  A wooden floodgate would be incinerated though.... dwarven physics makes little since some (most) of the time.

Not strictly true - a wooden floodgate will hold back magma indefinitely if it stays closed (it'll only catch fire once it's opened), and a wooden drawbridge will only hold back magma if it's against its outer edge (e.g. if it raises to the right, then lava flowing from the left onto the "center" of the bridge will very quickly burn it up).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Must be the beard grease they use in lieu of mortar. Forms a seal to keep the wall standing that keeps the heat out too.

I don't know how it all works, I just throw molten science at the wall and see what ignites.
