Idiot marksdwarf...
« on: August 04, 2015, 04:39:39 am »

Today's dose of fun at my current fort:

A forgotten beast appears in the second cavern. Some kind of slug with a shell and poisonous bite. I set the civilian alert and close the bridges leading to the caverns.

My fort is surrounded by a wide moat going through the first cavern all the way down into the second. I also have a stairway all the way down to the bottom of the moat, so when a non-flying FB appears it'll path up the stairway. Just in front of the top of this stairway I also have an archer tower, only reachable via tunnels from the inside of the fortress.

I send my squad of elite marksdwarves to the tower to wait for the FB. Kivish, however, decides that the turret is too crowded, and decides to wait for the FB outside in the sun:

(this is a screenshot of the aftermath, with another marksdwarf in the place where Kivish was waiting)

The FB appears at the top of the stairwell and Kivish one-shots it with a bolt to the brain:

After having killed the FB, Kivish decides it would be a nice idea to run towards it and jump down the moat:

After a drop of 28 z-levels (screenshot taken two levels above the bottom of the moat):

He won't be missed.

He splashed when he hit the ground. Those remains in the cave floor are his body parts.

To paraphrase Mark Twain: "Suppose you were an idiot.  And suppose you were a marksdwarf.  But then I repeat myself."

I saw this a lot in my fortresses : marksdwarves in current version are very eager to jump down from the walls on which they are stationned, regardless of how stupid it is or if they're just going to die from it.

And unfortunately fortifcations does not stop them, probably a bug, as they can jump through them.

A possible solution is to create some kind of archers towers that are NOT next to your fortress walls, keep some tiles between them, so even if Urist McSuicidal go and jump out of the tower for whatever reason, at least he will land inside of your fortress instead of outside (and dying from whatever is waiting there) and have more chance to survive then

The issue seems to be they climb over the fortifications. Putting a roof over everything seems to stop them from going through the fortifications.

For example, if you wanted to check if a unit was eligible to be a politician or a car salesman, you'd first want to verify that there is no soul present...

The more appropriate question becomes, are they awesome and dwarven enough.

Pretty much this.  Generally speaking, you'll want your marksdorf turrets roofed over due to flying enemies anyway.  Lets say that you got a flying iron/steel covered FB.  He'd deflect a few shots before flying over the fortifications and slaughtering your dorfs (those that didn't jump the wall on their own....).  So roofing will both stop them from being suicidal and stop flying enemies from flanking them.

As to why they jump with full quivers? It might be due a bug in the attack roll.  They might be rolling for "bite" attacks, then climbing down to get in range of one.  Does anyone know for sure what is causing this bug?

I'm not really sure that maiming someone and forcing them to live with a crippling disability for your amusement can really be considered "merciful." Just sayin'.
Dwarven mercy.

That's how I get most of my stone and ores: I just mine around the fort and the moat becomes deeper and deeper. When I find a cavern I just cut through it and keep digging. The fort itself is a square in the center.

Cutting through the first cavern:
