The baron's dead, long live the... lack of baron?
« on: July 31, 2015, 11:54:24 am »

My baron died, along with about 7/8ths of the fortress, to a giant web-slinging pterosaur made of slate.

So did his heirs. And his spouse. And nearly, the fortress.

So now that I am back up to 60 dorfs and over a hundred graves, I am getting annoyed that I can no longer have any nobility. Not that I really like them so much; it's just, hey, I like the challenge, and I already have the empty noble suite. Plus, the miner who finally managed to kill the FB is a great candidate for the barony--she likes steel, cabinets, and not much else, and has a nice stress tolerance.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but I'm pretty sure it is. It should be possible for the outpost liason to let you appoint a new baron, but of course this doesn't happen. There's a DFHack script for making a king, but not for making a baron.

I need to figure out a way to get a new baron, mostly because I want a new baron. Is there a hack to do it somehow? Or am I stuck permanently without an Annoying Noble, other than the relatively non-annoying mayor, until my fort becomes the mountainhome?

Isn't there a population prereq for nobility? Is it possible your pterosaur friend took your fortess population below the requisite level?

That's my guess, anyway.

For a baron, more than enough. I was down to less than twenty after the FB attack, but migrants have come despite "knowing that it might be their tomb" (no "might" about it, hehe), and my settlement is now at 97 population, 12 million created wealth, 6.4 million exported wealth, and City status. I'm pretty sure that qualifies it as a duchy, not just a barony.

Apparently it's a known bug/oversight of DF :
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Baron
Quote
If a baron dies, goes insane, or has an unfortunate accident, players will not be able to appoint another baron and consequently cannot get other nobles which are upgraded from baron, i.e. count and duke.
And looks like it was already the same in 34.11

I don't know if there's an entry in the bug tracker for this, but if there's none, maybe adding it could be a good idea for Toady to notice that problem

Their heir might just be living in another fortress, too.

So there's no way to hack in a new baron? Technically, adding the baron only adds difficulty; but all the same, I'd like to have one.
