Fun Fact about HEALTH CARE

I remember there being a lot of debate back when more complex injuries came out, but I never saw much in the way of research. I just had a dwarf fall while mining, and her entire right arm was broken. Specifically, her right shoulder was mangled beyond recognition.

Treatment included the regular cast/suture/cleaning for a broken arm, but she was then put in a traction bench. Her shoulder slowly healed to a fractured shoulder, whereupon her shoulder was treated normally. I don't see anything whatsoever about the mangled status in the wiki, might be good to add it to the Health Care page.

Thoughts?

It's probably kinda similar to what happened to my dad. He got into a motorcycle accident years ago that basically turned his leg into mush, but eventually (after several surgeries,) he actually had something resembling bones in that leg again.

Mangled beyond recognition probably entails the part has been damaged so badly that (until permanent crippling injuries besides nerve damage are implemented,) it requires far, far more treatment and healing time, ala the described standard care, plus traction, plus more standard care; this is entirely appropriate just based on what happened to my dad's leg.

Certain things being mangled though, like torsos, necks, and obviously heads, tend to be fatal. The heads and torsos for obvious reasons, and the neck because of all the damaged arteries.

She has since regained full use of the arm. It took a LOT of healthcare, but it's quite survivable, apparently.

Loss of the use of an arm wouldn't be fatal anyway, unless it got infected. Heck, dwarves usually even survive the blood loss from losing the entire thing. But then their stay in the hospital also winds up significantly shorter...

Anyway, the issues with other dwarves neglecting to take care of hospital patients does seem to have been largely solved. Yet to lose any long-term patients due to starvation/dehydration.

I had several dwarves with legs exploding into gore and such. Minecarts are dangerous business, I tell you.
Anyway, it mostly didn't take very long for them to heal.

Only when one of the dwarves had an overlapping fractur in one finger (!) he spend months in the traction bench.
Eventually he constantly required diagnosis, causing my doctors to get a lot more diagnoser-skill, while making the "medical history" screen for him quite spammy with the "Evaluated"-message. (Also had a few cleanings due to his finger nail being smashed...later I made nails, cartilages, hair, etc. heal via modding...wish I could make nerves also heal very, very, very slowly...)

Anyway, I'd assume it took that long not because it was "mangled beyond recognition", but because it was either a complex or overlapping bone fracture. That's when the traction bench is used, and the dwarf seems to stay in it for quite some time, until the fracture is healed.

I'm all for the nails, cartilage, and hair to heal, but nerves (at least irl) literally do not. If they're destroyed completely (like when a sensory nerve is cut in DF) then you're just out of luck. But, play however you want, this is my two cents.  :P

I just feel a bit bad about my wood burner who had a little incident with a troll*...for a short time she could neither move arms or legs because the troll broke the left elbow and hip in wrestling and tore the motor and sensory nerves in the right upper arm and lower leg (as well as causing other injuries)...I'd just prefer if after some very long time, like 10 years, it would heal. But I guess you are right, that is kind of unrealistic.
(*Never order hostiles from sieges to be pitted.)

I really prefer having nails, hair, and such heal though.
