teleporting while sparring?
« on: July 26, 2015, 02:45:59 pm »

I was nicely managing my fortress until out of the blue two of my veteran soldiers were missing. After a bit of scouting I found them in the river:

But I had no idea how they could come there, since the surface is walled off after one too many waterfall accident:

Looking at my combat log, I noticed that they were sparring and had a charge/collide/tumble combo:

But strange enough, the barracks are sealed off from the river by a tile of solid rock:

So, can sparring soldiers just teleport? Should I relocate the barracks away from the river? How many tiles is safe?

Thanks!

I sadly have no experience in the matter myself. I'm guessing to find out if your troops are teleporting through walls it would require a little more !!SCIENCE!!. Perhaps start up a militia with fodder, stick it in a 4x4 square barracks near the river and see what happens!

Sadly I can't try this myself on my current two forts. Hopefully others will know more about this.

I've had sparring soldiers dodge/tumble through walls before. I had my barracks overlooking the caverns, but separated by a wall. My mayor and his sparring died after a nine z-level fall.

This, of course, happened as the outpost liason arrived. If he hadn't left unhappy, the fortress would have become a barony.

It's a df2014 bug still present in 40.24 unfortunately :

I've read some time back that a work around is to designate the barracks to not touch the walls.
So even when the sparring caused a dodge, they dodge not into a wall to teleport off the other side.

I think it might be possible with fighting in general, under the right circumstances. I recently had a fortress where I let one zombie in to see if 85 untrained dwarves could handle the problem(they couldn't), but two dwarves survived the slaughter. When I zoomed to their location, they were both in a cavern that was tightly sealed off from my fortress near the central staircase, chasing around small animals due to starvation. There was no breach at all, even in any sort of diagonal direction, everything had been tightly walled off. They were so terrified of the zombie that they forgot how physics work in order to save themselves.

The design I would propose for testing is a barracks w/ vertical access, wall, outer room w/ only exit over pressure plate linked to counter. Put in a full squad for a year, then report number in the counter.

In practice, I use underground barracks and / or additionally line barracks with statues.

For what it's worth, I've put an extra wall in the barracks (so all walls to outside are 2-thick) and haven't had casualties since.

I've had this exact same problem in one of my forts. Sanctume touched on this, but basically when anyone is fighting (or sparing) and they charge into a wall or otherwise impassible structure, the game teleports them to a nearby square. This only happens when a dwarf successfully charges into someone.

The teleporting doesn't always make sense, either. I one had an adventurer 'fall' up trees, then immediately fall back down and break his neck.  Or as you'ce found, past walls. In my most recent fort, before I realized what was happening, my casualties due to this bug were higher than in actual combat.

My solution was to place all training rooms on the ground, away from cliffs. Although any of the above solutions work too.

As it turns out, pulling every lever in the fortress wasn't as good of an idea as it sounded like at the time.

This just helped me figure something out. In my case it was teleporting through a fortification as the result of a cave-in. That, at least, is imaginable, but I was surprised to see the dwarf relatively unscathed for having been flossed through an arrow slot.

Now, if there was some way this little bug could be used in my favor....
