Why buy a private island when you can have one custom built?
« on: August 14, 2015, 03:32:24 pm »

So apparently there's a Dutch company that's building private islands.

Promotional video

They've recently purchased a 185 acre lake in Miama, Florida and will be building islands in it for sale here in the US. No prices listed anywhere on the website, but I assume this is a case of "if you have to ask you probably can't afford it."

Still, completely awesome. If I had a billion dollars laying around, I'd totally consider tossing a couple dozen million into a private island. Then hire a couple people to staff it year round, and only visit for two weeks out of the year. And I'd want a lake on my private island. Because how can you have an island without a lake? And maybe the lake would have a small island in it, with a pool. But I wouldn't swim in the pool. Heavens, no! I'd lay out on a pool float with an umbrella on it and sip martinis. Wouldn't want to get wet while enjoying my pool on the island in my lake on my island in the lake.

Because buying an island is much cheaper.

Behrens is promoting a floating village with 29 private, artificial islands, each with a sleek, four-bedroom villa, a sandy beach, a pool, palm trees, and a dock long enough to accommodate an 80-foot yacht. The price: $12.5 million apiece.

Whereas in the island for sale catalog you can see several islands under 50.000 USD.

To be perfectly honest, even if I had the money I'd only want to live on an island if a) it was oceanic or b) I also owned the entire lake and all of the land around it. Otherwise you'd end up listening to boat traffic and partygoers constantly during the holiday seasons.

Besides, this sounds like a super-rich version of a suburban subdivision: sterile, lifeless, and irredeemably dull. If I had that kind of money I'd just buy a lake myself and build my own damn island.

Because buying an island is much cheaper.

Well, sure. But if you want to look at it like that, you may as well eat chocolate from the grocery store rather than having it expedited overnight from Belgium. Do you have any idea how long grocery store food sits on the shelves? Days, at least. Weeks, sometimes. Or have your maid wash your socks and re-wear them rather than simply having new ones delivered to your house every week. Can you imagine? Or suffer through the indignity of eating whole grapes rather than having your slaves peel them for you. Do we really want to go there?

I'm all in favor of simple efficiency and practicality, but come now, let's not descend into barbarism.

If I had that kind of money I'd just buy a lake myself and build my own damn island.

That's the spirit!

Is there a tiny lake in the martini olive as well?

We need to go deeper.

Course checking it out it seems that what they're building there are "floating" or "anchored" islands; i.e. not exactly the solid rock all of the way down you get by purchasing other things (though they do sell for about the same price, one of the news articles estimated about 14 million each for one of their earlier projects).

On the other hand building a completely solid island would be much more expensive, and is a big enough gap you'd probably be better off just buying an already existing island, leveling it, and then rebuilding it into your preferred state. :P

Nothing new under the sun...

(And of course it is the Dutch who are doing this.  Them and their expansionist plans...)
