Controlling gem window animation
« on: July 06, 2015, 07:00:52 pm »

With my tall apartment building, I thought it would be cool to make the outside walls out of gem windows and make a nice animation out of it. After some experimenting I found out that what determines the order of the colors is the order the gems are brought to the window, not the order you designated them in. This makes things a lot harder.

How in the world can I control when each gem is brought to the construction site. I've thought of a few but they all seem extremely tedious. Suspending construction if I find a dwarf approaching with the wrong gem, making stockpiles of specific gems in locked rooms, etc.

Whoever made this must have either been very patient or hacking.

Very patient, and I think they did something with cut glass to help control it.

Yes, it's by order the gems were cut, not brought: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=76685.0

I see. Looks like I'll have to have each windows' gems cut in order, individually. Possible, but I already have all my gems cut.

If the gems have not been moved, they are listed in order in the workshop. This will ~help~ figure out what order they were cut. GL.

I found out that cut gems (and probably other types of items too) are listed in the detailed mode in the stock screen with the most recently cut gem at the bottom. When building windows the most recent gems are put in last. If you have lots of gems the animation can be mostly controlled by forbidding gems at the top or bottom of the list and then designating the windows.

The newer gems (cut later) are forbidden in this image:

I call this the 'fire alarm level'.
