Four goblin ambushes in a row when most of my military was still recovering from the last wave.  One of them was a group of marksmen.  

My Mayor fought bravely though, he was unarmed and outside the castle, and surrounded, so I thought, what the hell, and made him his own squad.  He took down an entire squad of swordsman, and then some other goblins chased him half way across the map.  I'm going to start a new Fort as soon as one of them finishes him off.

Loosing isn't that bad, each loss gives you knowledge you can use in your next fort. Sometimes it can be fun, as you battle goblins tooth and nail to defend your fortress to the last man, or it degenerates into chaos and disorder an spirals downward to one dwarf, who commits suicide.

Not everyone died, I had a good 20 dwarves left, out of an original 60.  I'm suprised it went so badly, last time I took a major hit, the goblins just passed by.  I could have kept going, but losing most of my dwarves with legendary status just took the fight out of me.  I've started anew in another place.  This one is interesting, the biome reads as serene, but half the map is a black sand obsidian mix, which looks kind of like a blasted wasteland.
