Weapon strapped on
« on: June 30, 2015, 09:18:10 pm »

One of my hammerdwarves has sensory and motor nerve damage in one arm, giving him an impaired grasp, from a werelizard biting and shaking him around by the arm (it only bruised with the bite, so he wasn't infected). After confirming that he wasn't infected, I returned him to his squad, and only later realized that he wasn't gaining much skill because he couldn't use both his shield and hammer. In fact, when I inspected him, I saw this:

While his shield is in his left hand, his hammer is just strapped to his chest, I guess. I don't know how that happened or why, and I'm guessing he can't actually hit things with it, but perhaps it's time to retire him to some kind of workshop work.

The reason I'm posting is to find out if this actually CAN be used as a weapon, or if he's a hopeless case, or if maybe I should remove the shield and just give him a hammer. Also I've never seen this before in game or on the forum, and wanted to know if anyone else has.

Yeah, he's not gonna be able to used both a shield and weapon at the same time, but he should be able to use a weapon by itself just fine. Those skilled with a weapon can be nearly as effective as blocking with their weapon as they are a shield, whether it be in melee combat or deflecting arrows and bolts. Just don't make him fight a dragon, you need a shield to block dragon-fire.

I don't know how DF stores the info on how they grab their equipment. He might still think he's supposed to hold it with his disabled arm. So if you take off his shield, and he still doesn't use his weapon, make him drop it and then reassign it to him again.

It's a reverse hostage situation, if you kill the snatchers they'll fill your fort with babies.
