there seems to be a tiny stone hut next to my embark location.

Adventure mode, or Fortress mode?

If the former, SOP w/ Adventure is to start near a hut.

fortress mode.

i already abandoned the fort tho...it didnt suit my needs.

A while ago there was a similar discussion. It seemed that structure was abandoned, but the fortress founder decided to make some kind of use of the structure, so it wasn't a total waste.
