Profession Studying/Library
« on: May 31, 2015, 11:38:54 pm »

There are some jobs in the game you can't really gain experience in without doing some kinds of gimmicks.  You can't train in medical professions without  having injuries.

From what I've been gathering from the recent updates Toady's working on, (I've mostly been glimpsing, mind  you) he's coming up with scholars and ways to share information between civilizations, right?  What if some merchants just traded you a medical book that a scholar/medical dwarf wrote up one time.  Could you purchase it and add it into your library, for you medical dwarves to gain skill?

I think there should be books about professions, but they should only gain experience MUCH more slowly than DIY stuff.  And many other books to simply entertain.  Maybe if a dwarf is on break, he can go to the library and read a romance novel.  Maybe he'll get happy from  having "Read a good book lately".

I don't want an alternative to leveling skills, I just want a way for some of the harder ones to grow.

There are a bunch of threads discussing this already:
"Tavern-like" Academies
Book and library ideas!
Skill books writting and reading (Seems I posted links in this one.)
Lectures, school, and apprenticeships (This one mentions manuals are on the dev pages, but I can't find the entry.)
Skill books, education and teachers
Literature, libraries, and papermakers

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.
