Kobolds getting scared?

Just before I set up my first squad I got a message about a thief, but then there nothing happened. Since then I've had multiple appearences of three kobold thieves who just leave immediately every time. Is this normal? Are they scared of my 10 men militia?

Running away as soon as they're spotted is normal behavior for thieves.

Units that use stealth (thieves and ambushers, primarially) aren't announced until one of your dwarves or animals successfully spots them.
