Stonesense overlay
« on: May 04, 2015, 05:36:57 pm »

Why is stonesense an overlay? Why can't it be converted into an actual tileset?
Just wondering.

The only thing you can do with tilesets is replace the default rectangular tiles in DF with your own custom rectangular (or square) tiles. Stonesense does much more than that, so it is impossible to implement as a tileset.

This is a tileset:

DF draws everything by assigning various colors to those in a square grid, and nothing else.

Try drawing a 3d isometric view out of those.  You can't.

Stonesense does have tilesets for the various body parts and such, but yeah, the renderer is a whole other matter, don't forget armok vision either.

I see.  That makes sense. But could it be possible to link it up so that commands from DF also make the screen move on stonesense? So moving right 2 spaces would move right 2 spaces on stonesense? It seems like it sort of does that, but I don't know how to use stonesense very well.

Some people managed to get close to that with plain ASCII in Dudley's Dungeon (particuarily March 8, 2007 in the original series), but it is very useless and was only for the gag.
Meanwhile, a completly unrelated strip from the NAO continuation
