Gobbo towers can also be grey. 

The thing is that towers (underworld spires, or whatever) will always be visible on the world map, and from the legends map export and such.  Vaults are hidden until you happen to walk over them, which has some fairly low odds.

You can locate them (down to the regional tile, not the exact spot) using Legends Viewer, which is what I always do.

If there's a settlement close enough, you can fish for the exact site by asking about 'surroundings', and then ask directions when they name the vault.

Or if the goblin civ is marching on the town you start at, you can start a game with the vault already revealed.

That was a dark fortress, was it the same icon as a cabinet on the travel screen/in your compass?


The purple column icon on the bottom left is the big tower in a fortress which sounds like what you found, the grey square on the right by me is a vault.

The proximity would seem weird but I have gotten the hang of generating some pretty crazy worlds:

It was made out of slade, so I assumed it was a vault.

Yes, those are the tops of the slade spires that a demon raised when it entered the world. Have you noticed how vault-like all dark fortresses are?
