I always try to let some dwarves flee the inevitable destruction so they may migrate to a future fort. Preferably with scars from the destruction event, physical and mental.

This backfired horribly wonderfully once, when one of those dwarfs immigrated to a new fort, immediately going berserk and slaughtering most of the other immigrants.

I tend not to preserve anything from the good forts, but they live on in my memory (and the "what's going on in..." thread).
