Mysterious crash 2: The electric boogaloo
« on: March 25, 2015, 03:32:47 pm »

Okay, so, i just had my game Unexpectedly crash.  I looked at the log, and found the following announcement:
loop path fail: <same square> dog,23,51,162 -> 19,57,151: Id #11126:Path Goal Seek Station:Station Mill Building at 20,56,151
loop path fail: <same square> dwarf,23,51,162 -> 24,57,151: Id #11314:Path Goal Seek Station:Station Mill Building at 23,57,151
loop path fail: <same square> dog,33,53,162 -> 35,54,162: Id #11639:Path Goal Seek Station:Station Owner at 27,53,162
loop path fail: <same square> dog,34,54,162 -> 35,54,162: Id #11639:Path Goal Seek Station:Station Owner at 26,53,162
loop path fail: <same square> dog,22,52,151 -> 31,57,151: Id #11659:Path Goal Seek Station:Station Owner at 35,53,158
loop path fail: <same square> dog,35,53,153 -> 19,51,162: Id #11780:Path Goal Seek Station:Station Owner at 23,52,151
loop path fail: <same square> dog,20,50,162 -> 21,51,162: Id #11803:Path Goal Seek Station:Station Owner at 27,52,151

Its hard for me to tell what happened exactly, but could one of these error messages be the cause? I haven't built anything new, so its not something building over a branch, I know that much.

So, i just had a siege, and suddenly the game crashed when i hit the emergency "bridge" lever.  Nothing has changed in the error log. I checked, and the only thing i have different is a number of loop path failures.  Is this something that needs to be looked at, or is something in the log that can show something?

I'm pretty sure that the error message you are seeing there isn't the cause of the crash, just a lesser failure message. No clue what could actually be causing it (and it's totally possible that it wouldn't show up in a log somewhere).

Yeah, there are always error(debug) messages.

There are a lot of crash reports in the bug tracker that haven't a fixed status, maybe you're experiencing one of them, if the bridge trigger that siege crash, it's very possible there's some AI pathfinding spam that go even more crazy once their originally existing path are suddenly not existing anymore thanks to the bridge being raised, only Toady can know for sure.

You can always upload a save from before the crash (so it's easy to reproduce your crash) here :

And create a bug report with the link to that save

If i could replicate it i would. I just didn't know if there was something that could be causing it as seen in the eror messages. I think i can get it one to crash however. Can we still upload it if we used dfhack Since its technically a mod?

honestly i think that genuinely is the cause of the crash. ive gotten error logs EXACTLY like that just after a crash when i've checked. I solved it by downloading multiple new copies of dwarf fortress and new world gens until it stopped crashing regularily... now it only crashes rarely

You can try to setup another folder with default DF, i mean without DFHack this time, and check if your saved game (as a saved game should be compatible between DF and DF+Dfhack anyways) still crash, at least this would show if the problem is with DF or with some DFHack script

That's some pretty heavy post hoc ergo propter hoc you got there.

I get those errors all the time with no crash. They are minor and do not cause crashes. They are ludicrously common. Saying that they cause crashes is like saying that drinking water causes the common cold. It's not unreasonable to say that most people who have had the common cold drink water, but it is unreasonable to say that the water caused the cold.

0.40.24's crashes almost always have to do with DFHack, raw modding or building near trees.

Many players get those errors without seeing any crashes, so it is unlikely that those errors caused the crash. If the crash is repeatable (if, for example, you reload after the crash and when you pull the emergency lever again, it crashes again), try uploading your save with instructions on how to trigger the crash, which might enable someone to figure out what is happening. Unfortunately, many crashes don't manage to write anything useful to the error log, so while it's good to look at it, it isn't surprising to find nothing relevant there.

Are you using dfhack? Plugins like TWBT tend to crash on some computers and not others. Especially on (seasonal) saving.

Problem is, crashes tend to depend on computer, some have been unable to launch MDF and TWBT crashes the game upon (seasonal) saving on my work computer, but not my home laptop.

Otherwise it is normal to see loop path fail on raising bridges, you close off a bunch of valid paths and DF notes that before recalculating them.

Yes, i am using DF hack.  Have to on my PC, or else the bugs really eat up FPS, and it dies.  what is TWBT, by the way?

TWBT = DFHack plugin called Text Will Be Text, which lets you use graphical tilesets for your fort and ascii tilesets for menus and text screens. It also includes the ability to view multiple z-levels at once.
