Postliving, a Newb Fort
« on: March 08, 2015, 09:19:44 am »

So, after years of lurking and reading and playing off and on, I have finally decided to make something for the community to judge and find wanting. If, you might ask, you have been playing for years, then why would you be a newb?

Great question, I say. Thus far, I have never made a successful military, a self-sustaining fort, or made it to the circus. I've found adamantine once, made magma forges once, and have only made it to the first cave.* My attempts at defense have been feeble and limp, leaving me at the mercies of even small bands of goblins or monsters from the deep.

*I've probably made it to the second or third at times, yet it was the first cave I encountered. So.

So, with that in mind, I set out to make a fort, post regular updates, and get ideas and projects to perform from the community. While I may end in failure, if all else, it should amuse you lot to see someone who has never done anything with pumps and such trying to make a magma cannon or a dwarven waterfall. Or just get enough food to keep my people alive.

So, I humbly present to you,

-----

So, I began with world gen. Small world, frequent mineral occurance, and the rest being the base options. So pretty medium across the board. Here is what generated.

The Universe of Legend. Great name. Bodes well, I say. Thus, I began my search for a good place to embark...and I found this!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Clay, soil, lots of metals AND Flux? That sounds great to me! (What is Flux used for? I've looked on the Wiki, and for steel...is that it?)

And thus did I embark, to the fort of Postliving in the Universe of Legend. I swear, these dwarves will either succeed gloriously, or fail terribly. And either of those is okay.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And there is my embark site. Pretty nice. Not my style, being up against the cliffs, but I can work with it! I struck the earth, immediately cutting down trees in the general area, putting up a wood stockpile and carpenter's workshop, and set my dwarves to digging a tunnel just north, into the hill. I wanted to make sure that it would be defensible-ish, and that there would be room for caravans, so I did it in a bit of a strange manner, making a turn to the south as soon as I broke in. I also went down one level. Here is the trade depot location.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Looking good. That stairway goes down to the pure stone levels, where I start to hollow out my home. Progress is made!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now, that center stairwell goes up to the trade depot and outside. That section the dwarves are clearing out is my kitchen, as shown by the butcher's and kitchen set up. That 2x2 stairway goes up to the farms, and down to the refuse pile. That is going to be the food storage on the right side. In the top right will be dining hall, bottom left the dorms, and top left the crafting. The stairway in the crafting goes to my materials storage, and the stairway right below the main one goes up to the defense positions, as well as what will be the barracks, hospital, and way down. Yes, I noticed I screwed up the kitchen. One too many. Oops. Well, here's the beginning of the farms.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And the refuse pile.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Let's call that it for this first post. Second will contain more stuff! And will be going up as soon as I finish formatting and writing.

Oooh, can we be dwarfed into the fortress?  if so, I'll have a dwarf named after me.

Yeah, flux is used to make pig iron and then refine pig iron into steel.

Also: damn, I wish I could find an embark like that.

Where we last left off, the refuse pile was stinking it up. Lots of bones, lots of rocks. Unfortunately, what next occurs doesn't help the smell of the place.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Migrants. No special skills among them, not really. That extra farmer will be useful, but beyond that? Not really. Time passes, without much being done in terms of special stuff, so here is a view of the main floor after it's finished, just needing furnishings.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More digging stuff, more building stuff, and oh no! A thief! Because of the new way the stuff goes, with all those trees, I didn't find him until this...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So he's dead. The dogs did it. I'm proud of them, and that means more meat for my dwarves! The stuff can go to storage for now. That meat was a godsend, as when I next checked my stocks, I found this waiting for me.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fortunately, we are saved! The first caravan has arrived!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I immediately order my dwarves to haul everything they could to it for trade. Some barrels I had that were empty, and wood, and rocks. That's all I really had at that point. I traded it for as much food as I could get my hands on and still have them accept, which wasn't really much. Living caravan to caravan for food is not at all a good thing. Especially when this happens.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More migrants. The fishers will be useful, and more haulers is always a good thing. I have lots or rocks I need moved. So stuff continues. The caravan leaves, the dwarves fish and dig and haul and just be merry in general. And then...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Okay. Fey mood, on a mason. This will be good, right? Right?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

No.

Artifact armor stand is really good for room value, for nobles.

Sure, I'll dwarf people. This will be the last update for now. I need to sleep. I'm doing them in chunks of 8 screens at a time. Figure that'll be easy. Also, someone may need to tell me how to dwarf people. I don't have any clue.

-----

So, now it's time for a full update on the fort. Here's the entrance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here is the second level. Trade depot, the beginning of some traps, and the start of the barracks. With an assembled ballista.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Next level down is the farms. One of them is going really well, I think.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And my main level of the fort. As you see, I've got someone smoothing the stone in the dorms. When he finishes, he'll engrave it. Same with the dining hall.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And my current stocks. A lot of this is from that caravan.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After that, a bunch of time passed without anything notable really going on, until I decided to do this. I'm going to wall off a section of the stream, for fishing and for outdoor farming. Can stuff swim through and come up? If so, this may be a horrible idea.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then more merchants arrived! As you see, there's a little more progress on the barracks. That path down is my way to the caverns. As for these merchants...there were only two of them. They had barely anything. I took all their food and left them rocks. Bastards. They might have been elves, lots of wood.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Downside. Right as those merchants were leaving, THIS happened.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So. Many. Migrants. That dooms me, because...well...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yeah. Low on food, lots of migrants. I haven't finished sorting them out, and frankly, I need sleep. So maybe I'll have people who want to be dorfed into a fort that will no doubt end in tears.

Anyway, thank you for your time in reading. When I wake, I'll get back to work. Try to get some food. I need it.

This is a common rookie mistake.  The 'Other' line underneath your Drinks represents 'Prepared Meals'- Roasts, Biscuits, etc.  You have enough food & drink to feed your 64 Dwarves for a whole year :P You should definitely stockpile more (dunno what your population cap is), but you are in no danger of starvation or sobriety just yet.
