Can you no longer embark on hamlets?
« on: March 05, 2015, 03:22:16 am »

This is gonna seem silly, but some googling has failed to yield a straight up/down, yes/no answer, so...

I know that in older versions (it's been a long, long time since I dorfed,) you could embark on a human hamlet, and I had this idea in my head of adopting a human town and making them a Dwarven protection project - Building huge walls around their town, hosting my trade depots in the town square, housing at least some of my Dorfs and Dorven projects like dining halls aboveground in buildings like theirs, etc.

That does not seem possible anymore, however. I've found what I'm reasonably sure is a hamlet on the world map, but it's got a freaking huge footprint, and greys out my embark option.

Has this potential been removed? And if so, is there an easy way to bring it back?

Was it ever possible to embark on other settlements in vanilla df ?

I know there was an embark anywhere utility back then. Don't know if it has been updated for the last version... probably.

I know it was. I did it once by accident and immediately thought the better of it, to my mistake.

Anyway, I've just discovered that the version of the Lazy Newb Pack I'm using apparently comes with DFHack or something that enables various options on the embark screen, including "Embark Anywhere."

Dis gon' be gud!

Before Toady changed the way sites worked, and human sites only took a couple of embark tiles, you could use Embark Anywhere to embark on top of a human settlement. I did it a couple times. Doesn't seem to work so well anymore, but let us know if Embark Anywhere lets you do it now without crashing.

Wow... someone's been gone for a long time.

Yeah, that change was made somat like 4-6 years ago, back when fortress size shrunk, more Z-layers were added, and towns were changed to be somat like 15x15 tiles.

To me, towns at first appeared completely non-sensical when I embarked on them, because you're only seeing a small piece, and possibly in a very early stage of growth, where most of it is farmland. With that in mind, here are some relevant google image results to help you understand what you might be seeing, and what a developed human town would look like if you could see the whole thing at once:

Towns nowadays include farmland, taverns, castles, sewers/dungeons, roads, shops, etc. They still don't really do anything in Fortress Mode, and are only designed to interact with Adventure Mode.

Also note that very large embarks are essentially impossible these days due to the game finally hitting the 3GB Barrier, so you'll never really be able to embark over significant portions of a town barring a major rewrite of the game. You'll have to embark repeatedly over small areas to map out the town and then choose an area of interest to place your final embark over.

You're in for a treat, a lot of the sites are getting really fleshed out these days, and I think procedurally-generated dwarf sites are coming up.
