There could be monstrous plants that don't necessarily eat their victims, like flailing cactus, strangle vines, acid squirters or bomb buds.

Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup has a kind of mushroom called the http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Ballistomycete which reproduces by creating giant floating spore clouds that drift through the air a few yards and then explode painfully onto all available surfaces.  The spores take root and launch their own spore clouds.  A ballistomycete that takes root in flesh or buildings could be loads of Fun.

There's also the totally real and terrifying cordyceps which take root inside living bugs and eventually kills them.  There's one that lives in the jungle and preys on ants.  It actually takes over the ant's brain and forces it to climb as high as it can where it kills the ant and explodes spores out of its carapace, where they fall into the jungle to take root in more ants.

Fair warning, cordyceps are horrifying:

Well, yeah. They're what the Last of Us zombies were based off of. And that would make them even cooler in Dwarf Fortress because of it.

Oh wow

How we could fight a cordycep infestation in our forts?I guess would require severe doses of magma on the walls....

Or even worse would be if we get infect as adventurers and eventually kill our entire hamlet with it!

But I think I someone made a mod just like that in the More Abominations and in The Bestiary threads.....

The giant venus flytrap shakes the elf by the head, tearing the muscle!
The head is ripped off and remains in the giant venus flytrap's grasp!
The elf has been struck down.

I want these things to happen!

(tho to be honest it sounds like the sort of defense DF elves would be into...)

In order for the elves to even catch the notice of Armok they must be properly challenging.
