Weapon attack choice

How do weapon attacks get chosen? How often is a short sword a slashing weapon vs a piercing weapon, for example? Is it just as likely to be a blunt weapon because it also has a pommel attack?

It's all random as far as I know, both what attack they use and what part they aim at. Generally the attacks that don't work well, such as pommel bashes, don't  make much difference in a fight given the pace of skirmishes, but a weapon that can only be used for one attack like the pick is generally considered far better than other weapons.
