~from the diary of Dobar Eturanan, Militia Commander~
Year 102, 3rd of Felsite
A large batch of migrants came today.  Unlike previous groups, there are a few dwarves who are former adventurers.  It time for us to form a second squad; perhaps speardwarves.  The construction process for the magma forges is underway. The miners and the mechanists devised a way to transport magma safely.  However, the process is time-consuming.  The rewards will be well-worth the effort.  With the magma forges and and smelters, the metalworkers can hone their skills without the need for charcoal and eventually provide us with fine steel armaments.

Year 102, 1st of Hematite
It finally happened.  They're here.  Goblin raiders were seen approaching our settlement.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Everyone has been called inside. Dobar insists that his squad can handle it, but I don't want to risk sending them out without proper armor.

~from the diary of Momuz Avuzaral, TRUE MAYOR OF JEWELVESSELS~
Year 102, 17th of Hematite
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!! Kol Ecemmeng, a jeweler who hasn't lived here for much more than a month was elected mayor!!!! Who does she think she is?? Bringing in her cronies and usurping MY POSITION! There are still a sizable contingent that is loyal to me.  This will not stand.  The goblins continue camping out near the palisade and moat, slaying any livestock left behind during the alarm.

~a note written by Kol Ecemmeng, Mayor & Jeweler~
It the 10th of Galena in the Year 102. I fear I will not survive.  Some days ago I was inspecting the mines and the rocks collapsed behind me.  Why hasn't anyone found me? Please, if you find this, let it be known that there may be a murderer here at Jewelvessels.

~from the a speech delivered by Momuz Avuzaral, Acting Mayor, on the 21st of Galena~
These past months have been a trying time for all of us.  The goblin camp had us locked in our Jewelvessels as if it were a prison. Thank Gods, the vile goblins have left. I cannot promise you that they will not strike again, but I assure you that I will do what it takes to defend our home. If you wish to contribute, please consider joining our militia.  Also remember that we are accepting applications for Captain of the Guard and guardsdwarves.  .... I'm sorry that I must impart tragic news to you all today.  Kol Ecemmeng has been found dead in mines, apparently trapped behind a passage blocked by debris. Truly no one could have foreseen this unfortunate accident. I reluctantly re-assume the position as Mayor of Jeweelvessels.  Together, we can overcome these difficult times and work towards a prosperous future.

~from the diary of Momuz Avuzaral, Mayor~

Year 102, 1st of Moonstone

The goblins are back. This time with greater numbers.  They even brought trolls. Apparently there are humans among their ranks as well. The alarm has been called and the bridge raised. They'll be here soon.

"TROLLS!!! Help please, they climbed the wall"
By the time the militia arrives, a planter by the name of Mistem was beaten and eventually strangled by the trolls.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The militia does its work and the trolls are slain, but a few goblins and humans also scaled the wall.

~from the medical notes of Zulban Thabumkilrud, Chief Medical Dwarf~
Year 102, 15th of Moonstone
The hospital is full of injured. Some of them may never walk again without a crutch, but I believe they will survive. The militia has killed all the enemies who managed to climb past our palisade. The less-nimble foes can't make it through it seems.

As of the 1st of Granite, 103, the siege continues...

~from the diary of Momuz Avuzaral, Mayor~
Year 103, 15th of Granite

The goblin siege ended a few days ago. We need a way to deal with this threat.  They will be back with greater numbers and we can't prisoners in our own home.  Tosid Delerimesh, the hunter who was part of the expedition three years ago, took the mantle of "Captain of the Guard." Sure, early on many doubted her ability, but she become incredibly skilled with the crossbow since we arrived.  She recruited several of the other skilled hunters to train alongside her. I asked the masons to draw up plans for archery towers outside of the outer walls. The goblins won't be able to camp for weeks if they are being riddled with crossbow fire!

~from the diary of Dobar Eturanan, Militia Commander~
Year 103, 20th of Granite

Elvish traders visited again.  This time the mayor bartered for a giant dingo and a giant opossum! Lovely exotic pets, though I would rather have some bears that can be trained for war.

Year 103, 1st of Slate
A messenger arrived today. Turns out, one of those former adventurers in the spear squad inherited a barony. Surprisingly he told me that he wants to stay in the militia.

Year 103, 1st of Hematite
Goblins attack again!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dobar, Militia Commander: "Damn it! I am tired of hiding away!"

Tosid, Captain of the Guard: "If you send your squads out there, they will be slaughtered!"

Dobar: "Well... if your crossbows target their leaders, the goblins will scatter and they will be no match for my well-trained soldiers."

Momuz, Mayor: "No one is going out there. We will wait them out as we did before.  We can sustain for several months if we must. Please, Dobar, we will re-double our efforts to complete the archery towers as soon as they leave.  Your priority now is to train your soldiers and work with the smiths to fully equip your soldiers."

~A meeting in the Mayor's office, Year 103, 20th of Hematite~

Momuz Avuzaral, Mayor: "I have looked over your proposal for this defense project. It is certainly intriguing. Tell me more."

Nish Risentoskom, Engraver & Siege Engineer: "Of course. Before I came here I was educated in the ways of siegecraft and fortress defense. I agree that the archery towers will help but I have a defense design that can rout even large armies. You see, we need to draw the enemies into a trap. This winding platform design forces the enemies into the line of fire of our ballistas.
First, the miners need to carve out the path.  At the same, I will need time away from my engraving and stone smoothing duties while I perfect my building techniques for ballistas and their ammunition.  Once the ballistas are built, we will need to recruit siege operators to launch the arrows.  This is a long-term project, but even while underway it can be of some value.  If we place weapon traps at key points in the path, they should cripple our foes or force them to drop into the pit."

Momuz: "Hmmm... Interesting. This could work."

The siege ends and the defense projects are underway.

~from the diary of Momuz Avuzaral, Mayor~
Year 103, 19th of Limestone
The liaison and traders from the mountainhome came a few days ago. I bartered for the usual cloth and leather.
The liaison brought unsettling news:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's not just us on the frontier being attacked by goblins. Several sites have been conquered in the past year by two separate goblin civilizations.  Queen Dumed died in an attack and her daughter has taken the throne. These are dire times.

Year 103, 15th of Opal
The magma forges have been in full operation for a while now. The smiths are honing their skills and producing some amazing works.

~from the diary of Momuz Avuzaral, Mayor~
Year 104, 11th of Granite

Elvish traders arrived in the early Spring as usual.  This time they lived up to their reputation and brought some truly exotic animals.

Perhaps some of them can be trained to aid our hunters or military.

The elves must have heard that we have a baron in our midst and they sent a diplomat.  The fool whined about how we had "disrespected the trees". As silly as their concerns may be, the hope of acquiring more exotic beasts from their traders makes me reluctant to openly provoke them.

Dobar Eturanan, Militia Commander: "Cog, raise the alarm. Get everyone inside. Goden, go inform the Fortress Guard to take position in the southwest tower."

The Fortress Guard fires at the enemies as they approach.

17th of Malachite
The Goblins begin to disperse!

The melee squads head out to clear out the stragglers.

Axedwarf Iton Stinthadthedak loses his left arm in the attack, but keeps on fighting.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

~from the diary of Dobar Eturanan, Militia Commander~
Year 104, 24th of Malachite
The goblin army has fled.  This time we were ready for them. Iton lost his arm in the fight but the tough bastard just kept going. The doctor says he will survive despite the loss of blood. His bravery will be remembered for generations to come. I will recommend to the mayor that a feast be held in his honor when he recovers!

The outpost liaison brought a special message this year. Jewelvessels is to be a barony of The Nourishing Tombs. I told him that we will have our candidate by his next visit. We need time to prepare accommodations and to choose a worthy dwarf.

23rd moonstone Ettin Tiqua attacks!!

A child is killed, but the military quickly strikes back.

Mebzuth, Baron of Wheelssplashed deals the killing blow with his spear.

~Cavern Exploration Report by Atis Egdohamost, Speardwarf~
Year 105
On the 6th of Granite we entered the first cavern layer.  Even as we approached through the tunnel the stench was unreal.  Remains in various states of decay littered the landscape. Most of the bodies were troglodytes, trolls and gorlaks.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As we explored the cavern we encountered several gorlaks and a reacher. While these beasts are no match for well-trained soldiers, something much stronger has been brutalizing the creatures that roam here.

~from the diary of Momuz Avuzaral, Mayor~
Year 105, 15th of Granite

Another Spring, another visit from the elven caravan. More exotic animals, but still no breeding pairs. Sweet-talking these haughty tree-lovers is frankly embarrassing, but it is only way I can hope to acquire a breeding pair of elephants.

The diplomat requested that we limit our tree-cutting activities. We will have to agree for now.  I just keep saying to myself, "war elephants...war elephants."

~Cavern Exploration Report by Mebzuth Thunentobul, Speardwarf, Baron of Wheelssplashed~
Year 105
We entered the second cavern layer on the 29th of Felsite. Upon entry I quickly noticed the abundant growths of mosses and fungal trees throughout. Early on, we were attacked by a pack of blind cave ogres.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We slew them with no remorse.  I personally killed several by piercing their skulls with my spear.

~from the diary of Momuz Avuzaral, Mayor~
Year 105, 20th of Hematite
In the past few years the goblin assaults have been consistently arriving in early Hematite.  There are no signs of them this year, though we keep an eye on the horizon.  Human merchants arrived on the 10th. I traded some of our crafts for some bars of uncommon metals.  I'd love to have some rose gold furniture in my quarters.

~from a speech delivered by Domas Ledomet, Outpost Liaison on the 18th of Limestone, 105~
"Citizens of Jewelvessels!  Your efforts in these past few years have made you legends in the Mountainhomes. On behalf of Queen Erib, I hereby declare this settlement as a barony of The Nourishing Tombs. On the recommendation of your mayor, Momuz Avuzaral, a candidate has been chosen to represent the interests of Jewelvessels. That dwarf is Kadol Keskaldaros!"

~from Vucar Mistemgamil's Exploratory Mining Report, 19th of Limestone~
We have broken into a third cavern layer. It appears to be full of vegetation and water sources. We found something else as well. A pillar of raw adamantine jutting out of a lake. As with the other caverns, there is evidence of hostile creatures that roam the area. After we created a sealable entrance, the militia can scout the rest of the area.

~from the diary of Dobar Eturanan, Militia Commander~
Year 105, 13th of Timber
A truly foul beast has been spotted in the middle caverns.  The fact that it can spit tangling webs makes it particularly dangerous.  We will set a trap for it. A chained cat will serve as bait and the crowbowdwarves will fire at the monstrosity through fortifications.

The trap works. After being pelted with dozens of bolts, chipping off pieces here and there, the beast finally dies.

~Cavern Exploration Report by Dobar Eturanan, Militia Commander~
Year 105, 5th of Moonstone
The cavern was swarming with bugbats. They posed little threat.
Resources: gems embedded in the walls, veins of galena & tetrahedrite plus tubes of raw adamantine!, fungal trees: black-cap, goblin-cap, nether-cap, blood thorn, tunnel tube
