Newest version of the Boatmurdered style map?
« on: February 07, 2015, 12:56:38 pm »

Hey all was just curious if someone could point me to the latest version of the game that boatmurdered was played on. I've really grown to like the idea of the 2d style map, also by latest version I mean the version right before they switched to 3d, I looked through the old versions of the game but couldnt tell which one it was and was hoping I didnt have to download and play all of them to find out, thanks!

Wiki says it was between 23a and 40d. Its easy to play a mostly flat fort in a newer version though. Could probably even generate (or paint) a map mimicking the old river-to-cliff layout.

Thanks so much! I just really like the huge mountain that you have to explore that has everything in it, also the fact that creatures cant come down from the top of the mountain right on your fort entrance.

Despite vowing never to return to 2d once I got a hang of navigating 3d-ascii, I have to admit I miss the old-style river-mountain-caveriver-chasm-magma layout. The reliability of finding everything you could want if you just looked a little further, maybe.

Oh I just read the story of boatmurdered yesterday, it's really epic.
So were elephants that deadly those days? It has been a long time since I played the old 2d versions. I recall even wolves could be aggressive (now wild animals, most of them, only run away from you).

Now adays it seems everyone seeks goblins or undead when wanting more challenges. And since you have enough space in a 3d map, and you can build walls and hatches, cavern creatures are not that deadly either.

Back then Elephants were the one and only King of Beasts.

The version you want is 0.23.130.23a, and you'll probably want to apply a number of patches in order to fix some of the really big bugs in the game. I've been considering making a prepatched "0.23.130.23b" available for download somewhere, but I haven't yet consulted Toady to see if he'd be okay with me doing that sort of thing (my current build adds "Patched by Quietust" to the title screen and also updates the copyright date, and I suspect he wouldn't like that).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Incidentally, it's totally possible to build worlds in the current version with huge cliffs that enemies can't scramble down. You need to get into advanced worldgen and mess with erosion and height maps, or I guess you could do it with PerfectWorldDF, but if the cliff face is the major draw, that would give you additional features.
