Kdaol is a legendary bone carver so it could be a bone craft or any other goods improved with bones.

I zoomed to the position of the message and it was one of the edges of the map.
So it is possible the caravan took something away? But we all know it is OK to sell masterwork items. Besides, the caravan had left 4 months ago.
And if it was stolen, there should be a message about something had been stolen.

Ideas?

Oh, forgot that. Though I think it is unlikely. I don't have hunters and the only makeshift buzzard killer has been removed from service several months ago. The bolts he was using were not masterpiece. The only master piece bolts are currently sitting in the workshop...

Dwarf1 shot an animal.
Dwarf1 put away the stack of bolts.
Dwarf2 improved the stack of bolts to masterwork.
Bolt lodged inside the animal became masterwork as well.

Nope, once a bolt is shot it becomes its own stack.

I guess it was not a classical thief picking up sray bolts or worse?
Be it either a Kobold or a Kea.

More likely a Kobold. Specially if you have your entrance unguarded or when you have more than one and leaving least one of them unwatched.

I've killed a kobold years ago.

Can a thief steal two items at once now?

He carried one bolt in his hand, and took one bolt in his body. Maybe you didn't notice the thief announcement.

Maybe it's not kobold, but a kleptic animal, which doesn't trigger announcement.

Are these notifications displayed if a thief is still hidden? 2 Kobolds snuck in, stole some things and left without being spotted?

I do not believe that you will get the notification if something is stolen and the thief gets away with it other then the message that you got.
