I have been trying to mod them to be brewable for a long time, but I have failed.

Give them an itemcorpse tag for a brewable food item?

Plump helmet men are adorable. In one of my fortresses, I tamed several - I don't recall if this required adding a tag or two to the raws - and set them loose in the fortress. Over the course of many years, they reproduced prolifically, until they outnumbered the dwarves. Because they did nothing but idle, the mushroom folk constantly trained their social skills. After many years, the eldest plump helmet men were legendary in most social skills - despite not having a mouth. I figured they communicated via a complex system of spores and body language.

Then the goblins got inside and slaughtered all of them.

My only experience with PHM is them making mad, suicidal dashes for the surface. They will run right through my fort and attempt to leave the map via the aboveground map edge. Provided they avoid all the cage traps, and don't confront any of my dwarves in confined hallways, they make it out fine and I'm fine with that. They seem slightly frantic but mostly cool guys.

Always a safe default assumption in this game

I've had a few plump helmet men show up in the caverns before.  They don't do a whole lot except wander around, being purple.

Being benign in every possible way, I dont have any real feelings about them, other than that they probably shouldnt be subjected to torture.

Can they be bred in vanilla? I captured a few of each gender a while ago and they're just rotting in my shared sentient cage. I want to use them as shock troops.

They can breed in captivity, but animals dont breed in cages. (A trick used to contain cat populations long enough for butchering to be effective after a catsplosion, used since cages became a thing.)

To have little plump helmet cannon fodder factories, you need to put them into a nice dank room together.

How do I prevent them from escaping? They just climbed out of the pit I put them in. I recaptured them, but I don't want it to happen again. Do I need to smooth the pit's walls?

Step 1)  Install the plump helmet man cage into an enclosed room (Including a ceiling)
Step 2) Use a raising bridge instead of a door to seal the room.
Step 3) Link the cage to a lever to open it remotely.
Step 4) install an airlock between the breeding chamber and where you want to dispense your plump helmet men. (Say, into the danger room)
Step 5) Ensure that the bridge that keeps the helmet men "in" is in the UP position
Step 6) Pull the lever that opens the cage
Step 7) Wait for baby plump helmet men
Step 8) Profit

Doors wont close if plumpy the plump helmet man refuses to get out of the doorway, (or dies in the doorway).

Raising bridge though?
What's that plumpy? Insurrection!? We'll just SEE about that now wont we!

:D

(Really, it's just to assure that the helmet men can be forcibly contained inside the breeding chamber, and only admitted into the training room as desired.)

I think they're cute. I was sad when I watched mine die in the Great Cavern Fires (Not one, but two consecutive firey forgotten beasts. Even the mushroom trees in the water burned, turning the water around them to steam).

This might be relevant, an example of the weird things that Plump Helmet Men can get up to.

If I hadn't had such a Forgotten Beast problem, I would have bred mine for food, definitely. They are so adorable.

I dont know why.. but the intro from Grimm's Fairytale Classics (Retro cartoons from the 80s that were on Nickelodeon) came to mind, and after playing it-- I had this HORRIBLE mental image of it being applied "Ironically" to dwarf fortress.  There is this little 1/2 second part of the intro vid where the flying munchkin girl jumps on some mushroom men and they all look up at her. Maybe that's what reminded me of it?

Here's a link for those that have never seen it

When the happy sounding song mentions "meet friendly elves and witches too", I image a masterwork mod enabled elven siege, and then they mention "Enchanted castles wait for you!" and I imagine necromancer towers.

Come join the FUN indeed.
