Hauling priority
« on: February 04, 2015, 06:09:20 am »

Is it just me or hauling jobs still have too high a priority after the 40.23/24 overhaul?

One particular thing I've noticed is that after cutting down 20-25 trees at once
designated bridges/wells didn't get finished until all the wood was stockpiled
(disabling wood hauling on the architect/mason/blacksmith did get them started).

There are some other occasions where I notice that someone who has a somewhat important
labor enabled is "Storing item in a stockpile" instead of doing his actual job.

Is there any way to make all hauling labors have the lowest possible priority?
As in, they should only be taken up by someone who would be idle otherwise.
Before reaching the critical 30-50 dwarves (where I can have more than 3-5
with only their critical labor enabled and hauling jobs are done reasonably fast anyway)
it's a pain in the @ss to check on them manually.

Just keep a couple of the more skilled dwarves in each important job without stone/wood hauling. Disable more hauling labors if their response time is still inadequate.

No. You have to either accept your skilled dwarves to be unemployed a lot of the time, or micro manage. I suspect there is no such thing as a priority between jobs. As of 0.40.23 (I think) there is priority WITHIN some of the jobs, as well as a bug that causes random(?) jobs never to be performed unless you cancel them and recreate them (I've got a half built paved road since 4 years or so, for instance, but it still keeps the trees at bay).
