Welcome to Roofclasp: Histories of Hope and Denial
« on: April 30, 2015, 05:41:02 am »

hey there forums! so, i love the idea of story forts. always have, ever since i first read things like boatmurdered and nist akath way back in the day. and i want to try my own!

but in the style of a community fort, or story fort, or whatever it is that people call them now. the deal being: i play the fort, and provide a bit of a narrative from my character's point of view. you can choose to get dwarfed, and then if you want to, you can provide input into what your character thinks about what's happening, and what they think should happen, etc. you know the deal.

here we go.

From the Journal of Zulban Ashtreaty

"For the past two centuries, the Dwarf peoples have been on the decline. Though they cling to their fortresses, and their so-called Mountainhomes still can be found in the distant peaks of forgotten islands, most can only be found living as scrub farmers in the mud piles known as hillocks; they are on the long, but inevitably certain, road to extinction."

I read that, a few years ago, in some book written by some sort of scholar. I'm sure that they are or were a decent person, but that's about the most horrible thing it's possible to say about a bunch of living, breathing, hoping people. And I told that to the mayor of the hillock I lived in, and I told him that I was going to change everything, and prove that scholar wrong.

And after he laughed at me, and told me get back to digging up rat weed, I... dug up rat weeds. For a few years. Because I'm not so stupid to believe that I actually could change everything right there and then.

I had to learn. And I learned that there had once been a Mountainhome in the mountains nearby, a grand palace, before goblins ruined it.

And then I learned from a passing merchant that the goblins had left, and the whole place was sitting there, decaying and empty.

And after that I learned that there were other people like me, who didn't want to just sit around waiting to "go extinct". Well, there's only six of them at the moment, that I know of, but that's not the important thing. The important thing is that this year, I finally have the resources to set out on an expedition with them. We're going to Roofclasps. And we're going to make it into the new center of a real civilization, or die trying.

I'm... hoping to avoid the dying part, though.

*so, basically, it's a world where the dwarf civ is on the brink of complete collapse. can we bring it back? i've modded the game to include a few extra surprises*

is imgur a good thing to use for the screenshots?

*good to know, thanks!*

From the Journal of Zulban Ashtreaty

We saw what had to Roofclasp from a few miles away, long before we arrived, which caught me off guard. There were four square conglomerate towers rising over the valley, and the fact that they weren't on the pre-fall map i'd... aquired meant that the goblins must have built them. And that was a nice reminder of the fact that we were depending on the words of one merchant that the goblins weren't still there. We had to wind the wagon between two of them as night was falling, and... they do look abandoned.

Let's hope they stay that way. I've heard things about goblin towers.

And that's not the most cheerful thing to think about as we try to settle in on our first night here! By consensus, we're avoiding the towers, and unloading our supplies in the huge main entry hall, which is a testament to dwarven engineering. It's a big rectangular block, is what I mean. I feel like we can do better than that. I know it, in fact.

But inside the hall... It's filled with meat. Troll meat. Piles and heaps and mounds of the stuff. All edible, so that's good, but it had to have come from somewhere, so that's bad. Here's hoping we don't start finding dwarf meat stew the further down we go. What do goblins like to eat?

But that's a question for tomorrow. Night has fallen, and the Reclamtion of Roofclasp has begun! Now if I could only figure out where that annoying tapping sound is coming from...

*six dwarfs still open, obviously*

I'd like take a dwarf. This looks pretty good so far. Could we see some pictures of what the pre-existing dwarven settlement looks like?

And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the Assaulted Lanterns Magma Artillery' - King Id I of the Assaulted Lanterns
