How do you increase seige range?
« on: January 15, 2015, 03:29:47 pm »

Hi all,

I got a cool fort atm with water cannon defenses and cages and forts and crossbowmen and all manner of Fun things.

But unfortunately, I have no goblins to share this with. This is because I may well have not realised how far away I am from the other civs.

Point being, is there any way to increase the range of civs, so I can get invaded from other civs?

Thanks,

JC

You can increase civ number in both basic and advanced worldgen.  I've also heard the fortress defense mod is a good way to be drowning in goblins.  Also, make sure invasions are on in d_init.txt.

Do it again, this time while being sieged and raided before its finished.

I suppose... I just have it set up just so! It took a couple of days to get that started.  :P

And now you can do it faster, better, in less friendly place! Yay! New chalange! (and keep old fort as science one? i once got first, extremly massive siege in year 7)

And anyway, you could try to make one lever-pulling dwarf a vampire and using your watergun on your populace for bug-testing of the setup.

... water cannon?

Derailing minecarts with water in it to throw water globs at goblins.

I have been trying to do a magma version but it's hard to get the minecarts to move after dunking them in magma. But I have an idea !

Can't you just let magma fall over carts on a track* with grates on either side of it, letting it drain away? Even if it slows down the carts to the point of making them immobile, once it's drained away enough the cart should start moving again.

At least, that was the movement problem mentioned in the last thread about magma minecart guns I read.

Actually, my water-cannon is more of a Resevoir held high above the entrance. Basically it's to flood out enemies from my entrance into a ravine.

Think you're probably right, will just keep it for Science. See if I can improve my riot control with it.

It probably won't work. If water isn't lower than 7/7, it won't move creatures. Water won't actually move then either, it'll just teleport to the bottom.

It definitely sounds like you should choose a good spot for a mine shaft on the surface of this embark that is offset in such a manner as to remain clear of your fortress and then dig strait down into the roots of the world in search of spoilers. They aren't quite like goblins but they will definitely give your dwarves something to play with.
