So undead are kinda godlike eh?
« on: January 08, 2015, 01:37:12 am »

Every time I fight them, they punch my head into gore through a steel helm or some other such silliness and dodge around like a ninja.

Why are they each and all pretty much like fighting Superman?? Is there a way to edit the raws for undead to fix this insanity? I've tried using bashing weapons, but they dodge and take so many blows it just doesn't work, even when I use a superhuman adventurer in full armor.

I do not about what you are speaking, i cuted to pieces a lot of them. You just must have good tactics. You have full armor, okey, but how good armor user are you? As steel casted novice armor user you are pretty slow, so They will bash you to death. But if you are sword dancer (light armored, talented dodger without backpack (because you left it on tree)) you can just multiatack quick cut and dodge away. It will take some time, but you will kill a lot of them.

As naked dwarf in matrial trance with only -silver warhammer- i cleared whole tower just by bashing and jumping away.

Talented armor user/fighter/weapon give or take 1 level here and there.

They usually just end up using a grab attack on me, and then punch my head off afterwards. Over and over and over, I save scummed several times. That and with my superhuman agility, they can keep pace with me while I'm SPRINTING.

A fluorescent lime green Ñ or a teal blue Ñ? The first is a night troll/creature (which will be described with other sinister names), the second is a zombie.

This sounds like you are talking about night trolls Ñ who happen to be very strong, incredibly fast, and feel no pain. When they are armed with a weapon they feature no grab attack since they default to strike. But when unarmed (which you will notice when you inspect them) the grab attack is mixed in with the strikes which makes them much more dangerous.

The safest combat tactic is multi-attacking quick attack (targeting legs and arms first) + dodge away as Nikow mentioned (after you've led Ñ out of their lair), but only when you notice they are not about to grab you, as multi-attacks will slightly nerf the benefit of quick attack and dodge away, and you'll want your best chances of dodging which means dodging away manually as a single action. Never dodge adjacent since grabs (when they surreptitiously occur) can be broken only when you are moving away from your opponent. Dodge adjacent can also cause you to be on the receiving end of additional strikes.

Worst case, if you are grabbed and you're standing side by side not quite friends, you'll grip break by slashing the limb that's doing the grabbing. Depending on the situation (how fast is he/she/you, and how strong are you), you'll choose to quick attack or just normal attack your slash. The goal is to sever the limb. Your chances of doing this have to do with how high your weapon and fighter skills are, particularly when the choice of attack is shown as being tricky or difficult. If you fail to sever and the next move is joint lock, you're dead. There is also luck. Sometimes the next move after the grab will be releasing the grab, or your opponent will try to strike you, instead of the joint lock. You'll be able to swing at the grasping limb again, hopefully with better result.

Also here is an old but info filled thread about zombie combat:

I was referring to all undead in general. But for this case specifically - Elf skeletons raised by a mummy. I can sometimes kill a few, but even 2 or 3 at a time just wreck me.

Undead (animated corpses) have extremely high physical strength in 0.40.x, and you won't stand a chance against them at Talented Fighter/Weapon (and likely Dodging) skills.

The most important part is having a lot of dodging so that you can manually dodge (so that you actually control the direction in which you dodge, which should be away from the undead) their grab attacks and for generally not taking a very likely fatal hit.

As for running away, you should keep in mind that enemies are stupid and sprint at all times - which means that you should never try to sprint away from an untiring enemy (like a bronze colossus or a zombie).
Fortunately you can exploit the sprint mechanics - namely the slow speed of sprinting while turning - to run away from the monsters; all you have to do is jog away in zig-zag patterns (i.e. try to make them turn as much as possible, and don't be afraid to run in the opposite direction either) and you'll likely get away.

Maybe this was stealthily fixed in some later 0.40.x revisions (wtf is with some of those replies) but this was certainly the case in 0.40.13 or whatever, and likely still is since you're getting your ass handed to you by zombies.

btw boogiemen are popcorn-tier enemies compared to an equally large group of zombies

As I mentioned above this link: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=143991.30

Pretty much it was the Adventure Mode forum discussion on killing the undead. Nikow, Findulidas, Robsoie and others posted their thoughts there. The whole thread is worth reading and should answer your questions with regard to fighting undead mobs.

I don't know, but for me Zombies were never really a problem, unless I fought them in groups of more than 3. When clearing a tower I'd always try to pull out three (or less) to a maximum four and then kill them, otherwise I'd run away till they lost track of me. Of course, there was still a danger of getting "insta-killed" - broke bones are just ridiculous at the moment, it's pretty much a death sentence when even the smallest of your bones decides to crack.
Then again, I mostly train my skills a bit before ever deciding to do so.

Bogeyman on the other hand ... even on completly legendary skill levels I had one adventurer die from head-popping pretty much "within seconds". Even on that skill level you HAVE to try fighting them one by one. Worst thing is when they kill you before you wake up even. And never try to find them while still "Stunned", jump around in circles until you are not stunned anymore.
If you are just starting - get a companion. Bogeyman seem to ignore iron armor pretty much, it feels like, and will kill you no matter what you do. Only one of my adventurers was able to kill a group of bogeyman before reaching legendary skills - I played it extremly carefully, only took easy or easiest hits on legs and arms (they'd often bleed to death) and jumped around a lot to keep them away and attack them one by one. (The adventurer still died the next night against bogeyman though, pretty much on the first hit due to a broken bone through iron armor...)

Night Creatures are also not to be messed with unless you trained a bit more, as already said, they CAN be very dangerous.
A bit weird to me that they can just punch or kick through metal armor...

Two dwarfs and I were ambushed by a single zombie weasel.

Smaller zombie barn owls? Cut them in half with an +iron short sword+ no problem. Much larger zombie alligators? Easily soloed by my companions. Weasels though, oh god, the weasels...

It is too small to be much of a direct threat - all it can really do is bite a bit, and once I realized what was happening I punched its teeth out before it could do more than badly mutilate Inod the marksdwarf's nose.

What the weasel had persistence. This weasel was nonstop; we'd hit it and send it flying but it just would not die, and it would never grow tired due to being undead. My companions hacked and stabbed ferociously but eventually collapsed beside it due to exhaustion and were repeatedly gummed and ineffectually scratched. If I left them to their fate then I would be bogeyman food, and I have a no dwarf left behind policy anyway.

It had to die eventually, right?

I started out fairly low-level but quickly reached master fighter while repeatedly stabbing, slashing, shield-bashing and throwing this one weasel. Slashing at limbs did nothing except tear the skin but I took out a few paws by biting it and shaking it around. As I leveled it finally got knocked back hard enough to explode.

When I later came back to the haunted desert alone to do more training I noticed that only
*some* weasels are this tough - some die quickly and some do not. A few are truly immortal as far as I can tell. I think that if you hit them hard enough to pulp something they just fly away if they're in the right weight range, making them perfect undead punching bags.

Weasels though, oh god, the weasels...

I had a dream like that once, except it was me fighting a non-zombified mongoose.
They're tough little buggers, those.
