Nurseries for Dwarf Children
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:27:23 pm »

The idea is for dwarf babies and young children to idle in a room/zone designated as a nursery to keep the babies and children out of trouble and maybe make them less useless. A cradle or school table would be added into the list of items to be made at a workshop, which when made into a room would be a nursery. Then Dwarf babies and young children would idle in the room and socialize. You could make a stockpile in the room and place things such as toys, crafts, and small animals in the room for the children to play with, after "playing" the baby or child might level up a skill to novice that was associated with the toy they played with.

Examples of Toys and their corresponding skills:
Crafts: Mechanics, Carpentry, Metal Working, (Depends on the material the craft was made with.) (Favored by children with high creativity)
Toys Without an obvious association with a skill: Random Skill
Toy Weapons: Fighter, Dodger, Military Tactics
Instruments: Social skills

At the age of 7 or 6 Dwarfs will leave the nursery as a normal child with any of the skills they learned in the nursery, And seeking out an Apprenticeship

I like the idea of toys leading to skills. As far as the nursery idea you can already accomplish something pretty similar by making a burrow for just the children.

This is a good idea

It would only make sense though if there was a limit on the amount of skill that could be obtained from the nursery, like only up to adequate or competent.

It would be silly for children playing with toy swords to become skilled fighters that can easily slay goblins when they become adults.

Another option would be for a select group of children to undergo intensive training like Spartans that would make them skilled fighters when adults. It would be cheap if all the children could do this though, the player could maybe choose which children do it based on there traits and those that have poor physical attributes or are mentally unhealthy would be unlikely to finish the program without training injuries or a psychological breakdown.

The toys idea would be influenced by the traits of a child, if a child doesn't have the right attitude or traits to like playing with toy swords, he wont.  The same goes with other toys like blocks or instruments.
A child could probably only level up a skill associated with a toy to novice after a long period of time. Mostly it would just influence a child to pick what field they would like to have an apprenticeship in.
