The Plague Master
All evidence points to the king as perpetrator of the blackmail.  The letters discovered come from the palace, the cures in palace vials - and worse, evidence of sources of the plague being used to poison wells and water sources throughout the land.  You are all but ready to attempt to arrest the king himself when Bradley's Intriguing Knight stumbles upon the real perpetrator - the king's chamberlain!  His identity revealed, half the palace guard sprung to the chamberlain's aid in an attempted coup, but the Charming Captain and the remnants of the king's guard were able to overpower them and slay the treacherous chamberlain.  With the captured guard in chains, a purge of the spy network was possible thanks to their 'volunteered' information on the identity of plants and moles amongst our informers.  More importantly, the cure for the plague has been found!  All that remains now is its distribution.

Resources Required: 5 Etiquette, 4 Might
The success of this crisis strengthens the Ministry of the Interior.

The Scholarly Poisonings
The Devout Swindler and the Learned Thief have known more than a few poisoners in their time, and it wasn't hard for them to track down the method - the scholars all eat at a common refectory, given food from a menu provided by the Library's cook.  Interrogation of the cook revealed her innocence, but suggested that sometimes scholars took turn helping her out in the kitchen.  The scholar in question, a foreigner from Moun, attempted to break and flee when discovered, but has been safely handed over to the Ministry of the Interior for questioning.  Meanwhile, the Wrathful Librarian (after a certain amount of irate shouting) was able to determine the poison used (Vidic's Eye extract) and an antidote - the poisoned scholars have made a full recovery.

Resources Required: 5 Guile, 4 Knowledge
The success of this crisis strengthens the Royal Library.

Crisis Auto-Worsens: The Order of St Julian

The pirates belonging to the Order of St Julian have sacked a monastery on the coast and taken control of it as a base of operations!  The monks there are surely dead, but this is a clear strike against the integrity of the faith.  If something is not done, they can only go on to reave across the rest of Elbreth!

This is now a Major Crisis.

January

The sleeping sickness may finally be at an end as the new year dawns, and things are looking up for Elbreth.  The king is overjoyed, but saddened at the treachery of a life-long friend.  A new chamberlain has been appointed, and the king currently favours Cinad and Harriet Bradley.

OOC: If this doesn't get going again within one week, then Pangaea will proclaim a republic and have herself elected First Consul.

OOC: Am I the only one who hasn't received new cards? I assumed that Iituem was withholding them until this turn's royal favors had been distributed.

Pangaea is reading a dispatch from the Interior Ministry, snickering occasionally.
"That's right, don't you even countenance the thought of threatening this kingdom. I feel sorry for Sir Chamberlain, though. It's awful, the way some people end up. Destroying things and ultimately themselves."

"It would seem that the fates are laying siege to our most blessed Church. The sacked monastery is just the tip of the turnip. Does the Court Chaplain have a plan for countering this?"

OOC: If this doesn't get going again within one week, then Pangaea will proclaim a republic and have herself elected First Consul.
Pangaea's Coup
The trigger for the chain of events leading to the declaration of the Elberth Republic was a lack of resources coming from the crown. Though excuses were being made for why essential personel were not being delivered to the Viziers on time, nobody was convinced. Something was fishy.

An investigation by the Minsitry of the Interior (the only Ministry who is even halfway-decent) determined that the King was indeed responsible for the Sleeping Sicknesss, and when he feared getting caught, used the Chamberlain as a scapegoat. By delaying supplies to the various advisors, the King hoped to buy some time to come up with a new plan.

When the spies stormed the palace to "disappear" the King, he had already disappeared...to the Archbishopric of Suul.

The religious elders in Suul probably would not have cared about some internal power struggle so long as proper respect was given to the Father of Suul. But proper respect was not given to that diety, as can be seen by the rampant Mounish heresy and the default of Elberth's debts. The Archbishopric declared war on Elberth, citing a need to purge the country of "Heterodox spies and corrupt advisors". Concidentically, the Bank of Suul also loaned some money to the King to enable him to develop brand new plagues.

Pangaea took action to assemble a new government to fight off the "royalists": the Elberth Republic. The advisors are now recognized as leaders of "political parties" (some weird term referring to secret societies with a platform and an animal mascot). She gloriously declared herself the First Consul, thereby officially becoming the figurehead leader of a bankrupt police state about to be invaded by religious bankers. Even if the army can fight off the bankers (which is very uncertain), other countries will see the current crisis as an opportunity for them to exploit. The St. Julian pirates are just the beginning.

There is, of course, good news. The advisors had temporally put aside their desires for personal power for the sake of keeping the kingdom on life support. But for every problem they resolve, another keeps popping up, and the problems left unsolved just becomes worse. It seems that no matter what they do, the kingdom will only spiral into further and further disaster. One has to ask...is it better to serve in Heaven or reign in Hell?
