migration waves, what do you get?
« on: January 10, 2015, 04:23:45 pm »

I'm using the 40.19 starter pack and capped child at 10.
See my fort mode "sub 5 fps quest" for other details.

I'm trying to get to 1000 dwarfs, but 9 yrs in I'm at
275 (11 of them kids)!!

My biggest wave to date was only 23. Usually it goes..
 Less than 10...
 Less than 10...
 Less than 20...
I'm really thinking its the child cap, rejecting immigrants with kids then not having singles in the "migrant pool".

At this rate it'll be about 35 years ingame to get 1000!!!
Any thoughts?
What size waves do you get when capping kid numbers low?

 Thanks

1000 dwarfs?  I admire your ambition, but I don't know if that's even possible on an average home computer.

I keep all my population caps low (strict cap 84) and my first two waves are usually 4-5 if I'm lucky, and 3-4 plus 3-6 kids if I'm unlucky.  Some embarks just attract tons of dwarflings for whatever reason.

@Badger Storm:
How do you achieve this?
I would prefer a reasonably slow immigration pace with up to 10 per wave, but I typically get something like 7, 4, 10, and then an explosion of over 20, followed by one or two trickle waves (the second one a single immigrant, if present) to reach my pop cap of 50. My strict pop cap is 80 so I'd like to know if there is a specific reason for your choice of 84.

Like Goatmaan I get very few kids, for some reason, even though I've left the childcap at default.

Honestly?  I think it's luck, and there's not a whole lot you can do about it.  Savescumming doesn't really affect whether or not you get tons of kids.  I've left the cap at 84 because as much as I hate migrant brats*, it warms my heart to have children born into my fortress, and I don't get many because whoever isn't married upon arrival generally has no interest romance.

*If they're 8-11, they're okay.  No itty-bitties though.

Hm, the very few children born in my later fortresses have all been produced by immigrant couples. My current fortress is an exception, though, since the child has been produced by dorfs that married after having arrived (which I wasn't sure was possible). The married couple that arrived with their child (11 years old) hasn't yet been in the castle long enough to provide local production.

Ahh.  I usually get a few hardcoded small waves.  less than 10 (14 max year 01)

Then, they jump to erractic.  3 one season, 0 the next.  23 the one after that.

I miss the old days of 50+ season 05 :P

In 40.x version, there is no hardcoded waves.

IF you want atract more migrants make more bedrooms and keep death rate low.

I have 286 dwarfs 30 of them in barracks
I have 400 6*6 bedrooms (smoothed masterwork beds/doors)

So its NOT spare beds :)
Its not wealth, traders ecstatic since day 1.
3 squads of 10 in masterwork steel.
Most clothing exceptional/masterwork.

Any other guesses?

How is your civ doing? Is it okay? Is it big? Does it win the fights it gets into? The migrants are generally being pulled from the world now, so if there's threats on the way into your place, or your civ is getting its ass kicked, there might not be many migrants to spare.

I'm not sure how to check my civ.

But that sounds reasonable.

Can't butcher, can't work, can't ...

So I atom-smashed them all.
