New trees and floors

Hi guys,

I am planning out my fortress for a new round of fun! and was wondering how the new trees work with floors right above them. What I usually do to secure my fortress from flying attackers, is put floors (as a ceiling) one z-level above the gate area. would the trees still grow or held back by the ceiling?

Trees need two z-levels to grow. They won't grow if there is only one z-level worth of space.

There are some glitches about what happens when you cut down trees - especially if they are over a floor, not a solid z-level.

Trees with a roof 3+ z-levels above them grow normally. With only 1 z-level, all trees die while still in the sapling stage. I'm uncertain of the exact behavior of trees with only 2 z-levels, since I believe most of the trees have a minimum height of 3 z-levels when grown. And trees growing on a floor with space underneath it will frequently remove the floor directly under it if it collapses or is cut down.
