It seems reasonable to me that catapults and ballistas should be able to eventually destroy constructions (and be the only things that can). Material strength should matter for these, wooden or ice walls ought to be weaker than rough stone, which should be weaker than stone blocks or iron. If invaders can set fires, then perhaps wooden constructions could be burnable as well (also by magma, natural fire, fire monster attacks), there's another option.

Its not that complicated. Enemy siege equipment could just be given the same range as your siege equipment and if the map edge was within that distance they could just stay by the edge and shoot it from there. Also stuff like siege towers, battering rams and ladders are included in siege equipment, those would involve invaders pushing them up to walls and doors
I think something will have to be done about the way goblins just show up at your doorstep. It doesn't make sense and will make even less when there are hamlets surrounding your fortress.

Also, you can use all the space in your area and just leave 5 squares where you can't build anything. It wouldn't make much sense for a ballista or a catapult to operate on just those 5 squares.

From what I understand the hamlets arnt actually on you're map. Obviously the dwarves in the hamlets wounldnt put up much of a fight so as the invaders came in they could either run away or come for shelter to your fort and give you warning of the invasion. With regards to the problem of the 5 squares thats more an issue of the players rather then the games. If a player wants to cover the entire map with walls as close to the edge as they can then thats fine but it may restrict enemy usage of siege stuff. The only solution to that is to extend the distance from the map edge where you cant build or dig which I wouldnt mind.
