Hmmm, a question I dont quite know.

An obvious solution is to scare them.  Put a dangerous critter (i.e. always hostile, like a semimega) and put an los breaker in between it an your dwarves.  hopefully theyd try to climb away if it was poitioned away?

Maybe single military dwarf los rooms?  They trip 4 pressure plates that break los and alternatively reestablish it between 2 critters put 1 or 2 zlevels up?

So far as I know the ai only tries jumping and climbing in response to combat or terror.  And only if they can  sense their target but a ground path of less than 20 tiles doesnt exist

Apparently my dwarf climbed out of deep well instead of digging all the way down. But this seems impractical to actually replicate.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

I didnt want to be the one to say it but the climbing skill increases at the same rate as ambusher.

i.e. slowly.  its impractically slow, in fact, because it only gain skill on actual movement while hanging or attempting to grab something while mid-air.

I'm currently digging large channels for a moat that goes through a mountain, so I am constantly getting dwarves mining out a tile, then instead of stepping down to the floor, climbing up 20z to reach the top then walking allllll the way around to get back to where they were.
It's infuriating and it still hasn't got any of them to better than Novice.

On embark you could have a high-level-climbing-dwarf who was also a high level teacher? Or would that not work?

...If you give them crossbows and no ammo, they attack the enemy by running up to them and whacking the enemy with the crossbows. They do this even if there's a drop and/or a moat in the way. Perhaps you could convince them to repeatedly do this UP a wall, at a chained enemy?

So far I've had a few dorfs get stuck up trees due to stepladder-related incidents (If you're going to Mood, by the way, do NOT under any circumstances be up a stepladder) including one bastard who keeps "borrowing" in-use ladders from the other fruit pickers. So my dorfs are pretty good, at this point, at falling, and a few have spent months up a tree before I noticed that they were stuck. But it doesn't seem to be affecting their climbing skill all that much.

I think they get experience for climbing block walls, but not normal walls. You can also train them by making them fall and they'll get climbing skill as they try to grab the wall again, but you would need to set up a scary thing behind a window or something and then scare civvies as they climb to whatever bait you've put...
