Will corpses laying around the map ever disappear
« on: January 03, 2015, 04:25:34 am »

Hi all!

Will corpses laying around the map ever disappear? If so, how long should I wait for it?

Thanks in advance.

If they're in the refuse stockpile, they are likely to be eaten by vermin, unless you have a cat keeping the vermin down in the refuse stockpile.

You can also atom smash them, or drop them in lava.

If you can wait 20+ years or so they might vanish sooner or later. Then again, people usually prefer to collect corpses around their fortresses.

Easiest way to get rid of them as already stated partly is to first make a refuse stockpile for them and then go to 'o'rders and order the dorfs to collect refuse from outside. Everything in a refuse stockpile will inded wither away faster. Even high grade armour will if left there.
No idea how the vermin manages to eat steel plates but *shrugs*

Thanks for the answers, but dwarves don't even want to collect one corpse laying near the fortress (all other corpses were successfully collected).

What can be the reason of such behavior?

Possibly they decided it was "inaccessible" for no reason. You could try {d}igging a {H}ole underneath it, that might spur them to action. {grin} It worked when I had a dwarf get stuck when he was moody. He then completed his mood with a broken foot...

To make corpses disappear easily... Well, either you dig a mineshaft to the magma sea (works well, though you also do lose dwarves on occasion) or make a few dwarven atom smashers here and there.

You can built a refuse stockpile over it.

By the way, I use dfhack to get rid of those inaccessable corpse. Mark them Dump then run "autodump destroy".
